I want to get flowmaster mufflers.. that's definite, but should I gut the cat (or straight pipe) or should i leave the tree-saver on there? I know i could (more like would) lose back pressure, which means lost compression.....but how much could i be losing?
Backpressure and compression are in no way related. Backpressure should be kept to a minimum, but, some is required to keep exhaust velocity up, and scavenging at it's maximum, too little and you lose low end power, too much and you are losing power through the rev range.
How are you planning on running duals? Stock exh. manifold and a single/dual muffler? If so, go for the Flow, but, if you're gonna run true duals, a pair of Flows will sound like a pair of threes...

I have duals on my 300 now, with Dynomax mufflers, and it is anoyingly loud. The exhaust dumps to the side, in front of the right rear tire. I am going to replace this with a single 3", with a Dynomax muffler, all the way back out under the rear bumper. I have a 2" downpipe, and EFI manifolds. The difference in power between correct backpressure and none is phenominal- this same engine used to have headers with 3" collectors, and glasspacks, and made very little torque. Now it will pull a house down at an idle, and I am expecting a nice increase again from going to a single exhaust. What you do is your choice, but I think that you will be happier with a single exhaust, maybe 2.5" if the engine isn't that modified.
I have a single 2-1/2" exhaust with a high flow cat and Flowmaster 40 (too loud for me). I just put on EFI exhaust manifolds & Walker downpipe. Coupled with a Holley 390 4bbl., the increase in power is phenomenal.
The smog pump eats about 1/4 H.P. & the new high flow cats are less restrictive than some mufflers ( see Project M.P.G.) - so I'd say that while you lose some power to clean air - it's nothing compared to other gains to be had with the 300. I can IDLE up 35* slopes in low range/granny - the torque actually improved, along with a 10 mph (top speed) gain on the freeway on ramp (approx. 1/4 mile). And that is at 6,000 feet - I wonder how it would do at sea level.
I went from stock (2-ish) to 2-1/2" single exhaust last Summer - with the stock intake & exhaust manifolds. The difference was NOTHING (maybe 5%) compared to the 4bbl/ intake/ EFI exhaust swap. I don't know what a desktop dyno would say to my mods, but I say WOW - it feels like DOUBLE the horsepower.

"tell me though.......i like mine a bit loud......is the 40 series a good tone?? [/B]
My Flow-40 sounds like a cammed 350 (Chebby) at idle, then has a "diesel -like" sound under accelleration, and a noticable resonance at cruise speed. The accellerating sound is the one I'd rather tone down first, followed by the cruise "drone". The idle sound is kinda nice...
I am running no cats through 2.5" tubing into a Flow-40 and out 2.25" duals straight out the back. Sounds mean at idle (V8 sound) I have had people thinking I had an 8 under the hood. Nice and throaty at idle, Diesel sounding while accelerating, sounds very mean under load! I love it!
