Bad multifunction switch usually causes that... the MFS is the turn signal/high-low beam/wiper switch. Brake light circuit runs thru it too, since the brake and turn lamps use the same filament inside the bulb.
And for chuggin in first/second gears... how's your plugs look? How old are the plug wires? Also cap/rotor. Might oughta just do a sixlitre tuneup, search for it on here. I don't see why it wouldn't work for a six banger.
