Compatible transmissions

My '79 has the 300/6 in it. It has the stock 3-speed, which as you may know has about a million mile gap in the ratios between 2nd and 3rd. I have asked folks about compatible transmissions, but all I get answers about is the 4-speed that has the granny gear 1st gear. I don't want that. What I'd like to have is a 4-speed that has the same 1st gear as the one I have, 4th would be the same ratio as my present 3rd gear, and the 4-speed's second and third gear would be evenly spaced between. This would help the truck and would make it more drivable in town. Right now at 25mph, second is a little low, but third is a tad high, it really needs another gear in between.

Someone else told me the 300/6 has the same bell-housing bolt pattern as the 302, so there ought to be a large collection of transmissions that will bolt up to it, but I really don't know that much about the 302.

No, I'm not interested in automatic transmissions. I hate them. I have a new Ford F150 (company truck) with an automatic. I'd rather drive my '79.

You have a couple of options that I know of.

A toploader 4 spd out of a 60s-70s Ford car, it would have the gears you are wanting. But you would have to do some fabbing, because the trans is shorter and requires a linkage type shifter. But it's been done several times - do a search for toploader.

The other option is a 5 spd out of a '90 or so Ford pickup. It would have the gears you are looking for plus overdrive. This would also require some fabbing because it uses a hydrolic clutch. But it's been done several times too - do a search for it too.

If you are going through all this trouble, I'd go for the 5 spd to have an overdrive...
