i own a 1977 f-150 4x4,c-6 400,,and im curious as to which way the rear driveshaft goes on?(slip joint towards the t-case?or the rearend?)cause ive got this horrible vibration when accelerating hard,it feels like the rearend is about to drop out!,,on the other hand when acceleratig regular its just fine?ive replaced the rearend u-bolts,and the carrier bearing,,any ideas what this could be? thanks in advance
ok thanks, ill have to check it out,do you think i might have put the carrier bearing on wrong?if i grab it and push it up and down it does move quite a bit?
If the movement occurs in the rubber isolator around the bearing, it's OK. If it occurs at metal parts, it's bad. I'm not familiar enough with pickups to advise you on center bearing installation, but I'm sure someone else will post soon.
Did you take the slip yoke off of the drive shaft? I did on mine and forgot to put allignment marks on first. Ever since then I've had vibrations. Also, those splines tend to wear and become loose inside the slip yoke.
I don't understand about the carrier bearings. The carrier bearings are on the inside of the dif, and the axle ends slide through them into the spider gears. Are you maybe talking about the pinion bearing that goes into the front of the dif behind the yoke?
If so, there should be NO play in there. If there is some play, I'm guessing that's your problem.
yes the one with the picture,,is the(carrier bearing?)im talking about..i put a new one in and when i push it up and down it moves considerably......the bearing itself is tight but the rubber part allows it to move more than i thought it should,approx,3/4 of an inch one way,i got it from autozone ,thanks for all the suggestions ,this site is an exellent source .
There should be basically no movement in that part. I just had one put on, like I said by a driveshaft guy. He said that although the AutoZone ones are Timken, that they are junk. He put on a Spicer. I can't move it at all.
I know I got rid of alot of vibration with a new one. I would think about doing it again.
As Steve83 said, the slip joint goes to the diff, away from the t-case. Did you press this one yourself or did you have someone do it? If you had someone do it, I would take it back to them and raise all sorts of cane. Movement=vibrations.
I've heard these called center carrier bearing, or support bearing. AutoZone, and all the drive line places I have talked to called it a center carrier bearing.
That's why I posted a pic. Just to clear things up.
And yes, Steve83 is right, their are carrier bearings in the diff.
