Good morning Iowa, happy Hump Day! Well, we'll see what we end up with here, supposed to start getting nasty this afternoon. Ought to make the drive home fun.
Hey Roger. We got probably 9-10 inches. No power at the house still, I guess there are 40,000 in Omaha without it, I just hope they get it back on today, the wife is getting paraniod!
We had an ice storm that took out power for 3-5 days. Couldn't find a generator in the area for nothing, we had to basically drive outside of the affected area to find one. I hooked it straight to the furnace and got us heat that way, as the house at my parent's is a hot water boiler type.
The wife and I eventually want to get a genset for the house, maybe running off of propane or nat. gas. I'd set it up with an auto transfer switch also. Big enough for the furnace/ AC, fridge, freezer, some outlets, and some lights.
I had pulled the main to prevent back feed and just used a portable. It might have been able to run the fridge, but we didn't try... after 3 days without heat, we decided we had to do something. It gave us lights and heat at least. The output is 240v, but if your furnaces is just natural, you likely can run it on the 120v split.
