I'm going to be changing the power steering gearbox tomorrow on the above truck. I have the Helm's manual which makes it seem a straight forward job. My only question is do I really need a Pittman arm puller to remove the Pittman arm? I have a pretty decent universal 2 or 3 jaw puller. I've seen a picture of the puller that Auto Zone will loan and it appears that a universal puller might work.
It might work, but you'll probably break the universal. Get the pitman arm puller. You might need a torch to get it off, heat only the arm. That thing is REALLY on there. I had to cut mine off when i installed my lift kit in my old truck, I replaced it with a different one so I didnt care. Plan to be at this awhile, even the pitman puller might not get it off.
Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster American Thunder Exhaust, Sunroof, Clear corners w/ Diamond headlights, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .
That's it for mods now, saving for a Stang. Check out my Gallery for a look-see.
I went and rented the pittman arm puller. It wouldn't fit between the pittman arm and the gearbox. I decided to let the local idependent mechanic do the job. They said the puller wouldn't work for them either. They used some kind of body shop tool I believe to remove it. The new gearbox has plenty of clearance for the puller. I'll be able to get it myself if it ever has to be done again.
