I have a 1987 ford F150 with a fuel Injected I-6, 4.9:L / 300 CID. It currently has a manual transmission. I recently purchased a 351 Windsor out of a 1984 F150 with a automatic transmission. I would like to keep the manual transmission and simply mount the engine up to this transmission. I was wondering if anyone out here has experience with this type of engine conversion. Several years ago I converted a 300 stright 6 to a 302 v8, all that was necessary was motor frame mounts and flywheel conversion, so I have some familiarity with changing from a 6 to an 8, but none with the 351Windsor. My question is what flywheel will I need to get the 351w to work? The guy at the machine shop told me that he could drill out the 6 cylinder flywheel and balance it so it would work, but others have told me this would be a bad idea and to try and find a 351w manual tranny flywheel from a junkyard. The problem is there are none!!!!, so I was thinking that a 302 flywheel would work for 351, but the Ford dealership said that the 6cyl fly, 302 fly and the 351 fly all have different part numbers. If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate any input. Thanks in advance.
I got my 351w flywheel off from ebay. There were one or two up there when I did my swap. If you don't find one there, try searching on car-parts.com, make sure that you select the correct year and motor/tranny combo for your truck. I am not sure about using the 6's flywheel with a weight on it. It may work.
As far as the swap, the frame mounts do need to change, same with the radiator (upper and lower hoses are opposites on the v8), are you planning on not using the computer? 1984 is a carbed motor and your 1987 is fuel-injected. You will need to do something about the fuel pressure, the fuel injection uses around 45psi and the carb will only need 7-8. You will have to use the mechnical pump from the 351 and a fuel pressure regulator.
For more info on the 6-to-351 swap try hotwhlz85 or slikness they have both done the carbed swap.
Thanks for all of the addit. info, I wasnt sure about the fule system, do I just need to remove the electric fule pump from the 6 cyl. systme? Also, on the exhaust, should I located a y-pipe from a v8 system, or is is safe to run dual exhaust all the way out the back even though the drivers side exhause would run near the gas tanks? Thanks for all of your info.
As far as the fuel pump, I would just take out the fuse for the fuel pump. It is a pain to take the pump(s) out of the tank(s). You may want to check with someone else on that one.
In regards to the exhaust. I have seen both. I have the y-pipe to a single hi-po cat and then dual tailpipes out the back. You can run true duals, but it a custom job and will cost twice the price.
use a 351w flywheel, but it has to be the right balance. not all years are same.
also, if it were my timee and money, I would keep the six or sell the whole truck and buy one wwith the 351 in it already from the factory. these swaps never or rarely cost what you think they will.
but, if I was swapping a v-8, I would do a 460!!with the right gearing, you can get decent mpg, and have lots!!!!! of power when you need it.
then again, it is not my time or money!!! btw, been there!!
