1971 F100 project

Hello everyone - its another newbie in this forum. I usually hang around the MO Chapter Forum and the Van Forum, but now I can come hang with y'all.

Earlier this summer I picked up a '71 Bump from a friend as something to play around with. So far, I've been trying to get caught up on other projects so I can free up some time to dig into it. Hopefully I'll be starting on it within a couple of weeks.

Here's the details - 1971 F100 long bed, 360 CID, Duraspark ignition conversion, late model 4 speed / OD manual, Camper Special radiator. It's needs some attention, but it runs.

Not a bad looking project.

Thanks. It's going to need the usual things - front cab mounts, floorboard repair, new seals around the windows, etc. I don't have a deadline for completion so I can just take things as I get to them.

It's time to dust off this project and get moving forward on it...

Once I get things dusted off and ready to start working on it again I'll get some pictures of where I'm at with it.

Thanks. I started out thinking I could just do some quick patches and get it back up and running. After a few years of building low-buck beaters into reliable vehicles for my kids to use while they're at college, I've changed my mind. Now I will be going a little deeper into it and making some mods along the way.

Here's what the to-do list currently looks like:
1. Floorboards
2. Cab mounts - OEM style from Dennis Carpenter
3. Rust abatement & repair
4. Rebuild engine with 390 bottom end, mild cam, 4 bbl intake, and possibly headers.
5. Convert from manual to C6 auto (left knee is not fond of clutches any more)
6. Later model disc brake front suspension
7. Possible conversion to power steering (still need to research that a little more)
8. Go through the electrical system
9. Figure out how to add AC at some point
10. Windshield and all door and window seals.

I kind of like the old truck patina it currently has so I'm not in a hurry to go nuts repainting right now. The firewall, cab mounts, and floorboards will get a coat of something to protect them, but that's about all the painting I plan on doing for now.

I am ready to help with parts supply for item #6, and I have the parts to probably make #7 happen too.

PM or call me when you're ready to move on that. Now that school has started back up, my schedule has become more open than it has been in a long time.

Went to pick up parts to change the 360 to a 390 and came home with enough parts to shave a year or more off the project.

Sounds like you took a giant leap forward. May I suggest one other upgrade? Do the 3G alternator swap, and put additional ground on each of the inner fenders and the firewall and at least one more body to frame ground.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to see how things play out with the engine refresh to see if I have any funds left to work with.

I don't know how, but I think it's contagious. The last time that I went to the junk yard for "a couple of parts ". I brought back the entire front suspension w/ disk brakes from a 79. That is my winter project.

It is. I'm really surprised that my wife doesn't make me sign a waiver or something before I go looking for parts.
