Troubleshooting help needed...
I have an 89 F250, 351W, C-6, no idea what transfer case however it is a manual shift rather than pushbutton (I can go look if it'll help with regard to diagnostics).
The motor is worn out and it seems as though very little upkeep was done so I've done some tune-up work as well as the first change of tranny fluid (130k too much before the first tranny service you think?? Luckily I knew it was a beater going into the deal).
Now for the problem -
It runs as well as can be expected with no load, accelerates fine, the 4x4 seems to work okay etc. However with a load (approx 6k boat uphill) it just flat out won't go - except in 4 lo. No change with any gear selection. Slight change possibly in 4 hi but that could be my imagination. However if I shift it into 4 lo and drop the tranny into drive it you can feel everything lock in and it'll go fine.
Thanks for any ideas!

The t-case is a BW-1356, but it has nothing to do with the power you feel, other than the torque increase just by using low range.
You should NOT shift into 4 at speed, unless the hubs are already locked, and you shouldn't lock them for normal driving on any high-traction surface. You can damage the t-case.
