so my 05 Excursion is in the shop and was told I need to replace the HPOP as the pressure is under 85PSI. I got a quote of a bit more than 2200 so I looked it up and found all the parts (rebuilt pump and replay kit) for under 650. Is this a really hard one to do? looking at a video it looks like it can be done in the garage in a day or less and not too bad, or is it more of an issue than I can see? is 2200 a good quote on this or should i be paying a lot less for that? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> also, I just did an oil change 1,500 miles ago, am I going to need to change after this or no? anything else I should know? <o></o>
I have not done anything to it. it died next to a shop and they pulled me in and did the review on it. i am picking it up tomorrow (been out of town) so I can try that out. they said it was getting 12PSI and found an issue with the orings in the oil rail. i let them fix that as it was $600 and time was short. after that fix it got up to 85 and that is when they said the pump is out.
----- Do it in the garage in a DAY or LESS -----? Dang, I wish I knew that before I spent THREE DAYS laying on top of my motor ! Are yo sure you need a new pump ? Can you post numbers from your scangage 2 ? What are your symptoms?
back story :
was driving home and it died while taking a turn, cranks fine but no start. I died right by a shop and fire station, the fireman I was talking to said his brother works at the shop and they are good and honest. I said to myself, if you can't trust a fireman why bother, right? so they pulled the truck in and spent time tracking it down. they found the o-rings on the rail were damaged and leaking so they fixed that part. this took it from an oil pressure reading of 12 to 85. I was told that with the issues it could have just died to, so they recommended changing out the pump and the IPR at the same time. they said it could just be the IPR but while it was all opened up should do both.
is there a good way to test the IPR so I don't have to do them both? Looking at the video it would be a LOT easier to just change the IPR out if that is all I need. I don't have a lot of testing gear yet, or the truck at the house, so I can't answer a lot of questions yet. I fly home tomorrow and will be picking up the truck and pulling it home to work on.
Most of us use the ScanGauge 2 , available at autozone for $170.00. It's like hooking your truck up to an EGR' machine at the hospital. It'll trouble shoot the whole motor and the guys here can lead you to the bad components so your not throwing money away. Your problem might be the STC'( slip to connect ) Fitting that attaches to the HPOP' $ 65.00. You need to do an air test on your system to find the leak. All these things are easy to do but first you need to get and set up the scangague2
so this? ScanGaugeII : Linear Logic - Home of the ScanGauge
one thing i am all for is investing in tools to do the jobs right, so I can pick that up for testing. I have a bully dog triple dog 3 that I got for the truck when I bought it. I use it for monitoring and I run it in the tow/economy state. that will give of error codes too if that is all i need?
There are some other maintenance issuses you can address while you have things taken apart, like the oil cooler and the screen that is under the oil cooler. Also make sure that the only filters you are using are motorcraft and that it has an OEM oil filter cap. For the oil and fuel filters you can use motorcraft or racor (racor makes these filters for motorcraft and are a fair amount cheaper). It would also be a good time to clean up the turbo.
