Hey everyone I finally grew a pair and decided to tackle my glow plug issue today after work. Thanks to all the posts on here regarding the replacement of the glow plugs it went extremely well. But my only problem is that the 1st glow plug wire on the drivers side is chaffed and tore up, hanging on by a tiny piece of copper wire.
So I cut it off and made sure the end wasn't touching anything. Is my only option to fix it is buy a new UVC harness? I am not really worried about the money factor just the drive ability of the truck till I can get the harness from Clay. I think that because it was tore up before it shouldn't matter if I drive it now correct?
I am gonna go ahead and order new harnesses tonight if ya'll think that's my only option.
Also anything else I should be doing while under the valve covers? I have read somewhere I think that I should re-torque something down? Not 100 percent sure on that and couldn't find the thread again.
Unless you are confident in repairing electrical problems then I would purchase a new UVC Harness for that side.
Lower fuel injector hold down bolts are 120 inch LBS
Rocker arm hold down bolts 20 FT LBS
Valve cover bolts 96 inch LBS
If you feel that the torque wrench is not working properly then find a nut on your velicle like the front bumper nut and make sure the wrench "breaks" at what seems like the right pressure a few times. Do not use a 1/2 inch torque wrench on the lowest setting to try to get the inch lbs. Purchase a 1/4 inch torque wrench with the lower settings. The best standard to go by is do not use a torque wrench unless the torque you need is within the 25%-75% indicated range of the torque wrench you are about to use. For instance you have a torque wrench that is rated to 100 inch lbs. Do not use that torque wrench to torque something that needs 90 inch lbs. I hope this makes plenty of sense. I know someone else will verify my torque ratings very soon.
Dwayne
Makes sense to me Dwayne, luckily I have a few different torque wrenches. I don't have a problem repairing the harness, just didn't know if anyone else had, or if I was just acting like a cheap ******* by rewiring the glow plug plug and shrink wrapping it up.
Thanks for the advice and the torque ratings, much appreciated.
Yup, replace the harness. Your fine driving it for a short time, just assuming you have the wire protected from shorting. Otherwise just disable the GP system for a few days.
Ya I figured. I wish I knew how long it was messed up for. Last winter I don't think the glow plugs were working at all on the drivers side, I guess this is why. They were also autolites so I am glad I got them out.
i was in the process of doing the 50 cent mod when i broke the harness clip on the drivers side. i ohmed the harness and i'm just not liking the readings on glow plugs and injectors. so i'm going to order a new harness for the drivers side. i pulled two glow plugs out to inspect them and i've decided just to replace all 8 of them (avoiding autolites). i'll go to autozone and get motorcraft GP's. i pulled the passenger side valve cover off and did the same thing only this time i didn't break the clip. at this point, like i mentioned a moment ago, i'm going to replace all 8 GP's and the drivers side harness. my truck has 320K miles on her and as far as i can tell she's never had an injector rebuild. i think i'm going to go ahead and do that now. while the covers are already off. winter is coming up and i'd like to spend some time out in tahoe cold. any comments on injector rebuild kits? i'm guessing riffraff will have what i need? also, is there a voltage difference from harness to harness? meaning, are some 110V and others 104V? or am i just crazy?
i have an '02 7.3L
thanks in advance guys and gals!
blaize
thanks Dwayne. my basket is almost full. i don't recall seeing anything about replacing the injector bolts. anybody out there recommend replacing those as well or would they be good for another go 'round of torque?
Probably too late now, but...if in a bind, you can get the UVCH from an International parts dealer for around $35 usually. That way, if you have one in the area, you can get it right away.
While you're under the VC, don't forget to torque down your glow plugs, rocker arms, and injector bolts. For quick reference they are:
-Glow plugs @ 124 inch pounds (14Nm)
-Injector hold down bolts @ 168 inch pounds or 19Nm (or 14 ft/lb) (ALSO, I've heard some say 120 inch pounds or 14nm, but Ford manual says 19Nm)
-Rocker arm pedestal bolts @ 20 ft-lbs (Notice this FOOT pounds, unlike the others who are in inch/pounds)
thanks for the input guys. it is much appreciated. for now i'm just going to replace the glow plugs and left-hand harness i broke. as much as i want to replace injectors with rebuilt units, its just not the time. i'm gonna check to see if o'reillys has the zd-11's. i will do a quick search also for an international dealer nearby. i'll get this thing back together and focus on the tranny instead. i need to purchase a Q (torque) wrench to check all those bolts. i've been reading that i need to remove any oil that seeped down into the cylinder when i removed the glow plugs. i'm under the impression it could cause hydro-lock if i don't? so, in addition to the Q wrench i'll get a mighty-vac hand pump... now that i think about it auto zone has loaner tools... i could just borrow a torque wrench from them. but then i need 1/4" adapters for 3/8" sockets... oh man. i'm all over the place. i should just buy the wrench and needed adapters for it. have my own stuff for other projects down the road.
i also noticed some of my rockers are loose. some have a little wiggle play in them, some have very little, and some have none. is this normal play? or is this just wear and tear? thanks dudes.
I dont think oil will leak down into the cyl when you pull the GP out. That is only when you pull the injectors the oil will leak down into the cyl and you have to get it out. If your rockers are loose, torque them down and if their still loose then they are worn, but I think they will tighten right up when you torque them.
yesterday when i pulled a few out maybe a quarter ounce to a half ounce seeped in. i feel like its not enough to do any harm. maybe just do a quick bump of the starter as i've read on here to purge what little is in there.
thanks robbragiel. i'll check torques but i'm thinking the rockers are worn.
You'll be fine with the oil. But definitely torque your rocker arms down to specifications. Worse case is, go to Northern Tool or Harbor Freight Tools...and use a coupon! For torque wrenches, I waited until Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving) two years in a row to get Craftsman wrenches for $40 each (normally $110-120).
