I was replacing the fuel pressure sender last night and the ICP sensor broke off (it actually looks like it was already broken and someone tried to glue it back together ). I just ordered a new one off eBay and was wondering if it's ok to run the truck without the ICP connected? It seems to run fine, just throws a CEL.
The ICP sensor's primary function is to provide a feedback signal to indicate injection control pressure to enable the PCM to command the correct injector timing and pulse width and the correct injection control pressure for proper fuel delivery at all speed and load conditions. If the PCM detects a malfunctioning ICP sensor, the CHECK ENGINE lamp will illuminate. The PCM will go to open loop control of injection control pressure. (Operate from an estimated ICP pressure.)
The truck will run with the ICP disconnected, it just won't be as responsive since it's fueling based off a pre-loaded pressure table from Ford. I'd turn the chip down to a low or stock setting and don't push it too hard while you wait on the new sensor.
Driving without the ICP connected won't hurt your engine unless you really try to do some damage. Even then it would likely be hard to hurt something.
Little OT, but what is the easiest way to remove the icp? It has a round body on it. I got a new one from ford and was going to put it in and save the old for a spare, but as of now the new one is in the glove box. No big deal as all is good with the truck, but just curious. I'll probably leave it in anyway and keep the new one as a spare, but want to know. I didn't want to ruin a good one removing it.
Thanks for the reponses guys. I hope the new ICP gets here soon. I need to pull our trailer to deer camp next week and the truck is a real dog without the ICP and the chip in stock mode.
