Time to go to war(buying a new truck)

Ok, went to a local dealer and they have located a truck with everything I want. Now its time to start getting some numbers. Its a 2012 F-250 Super Cab 4x4 Short Bed XLT. Stickers right at $42,000.

What should I do to get the best price? Should I trade in my old truck or sell it myself? Pay cash or use Ford Financing?

How low should I expect the dealer to go before they will not be making any money on it?

Thanks!

I would trade in the truck as long as they were offering me a fair price. What engine in new truck? More details on present truck would help also.

I would use financing. Money is cheap these days, up to 0% so use thier money for the truck and your money to make more money or buy beer.

A good deal is a state of mind, so go until you feel like your getting screwed. It's different for everyone.

Go get em! Good luck!

Ok so I had the dealer e-mail me the invoice slip. The truck invoices at 39,700. X-plan is 39,800.

I'm always get x-plan prices at another dealer. So at the worst I'm guarenteed x-plan but I know people out there get below x-plan prices, and often its by quite a bit...

You should be able to get under the X-plan price for a 2012 model year truck, at this time of year. IIRC, X-plan is 4% over dealer invoice, plus $75 administrative fee.

Ask for A plan (dealer price) plus $100. That should get their attention.

I'm getting $750 below invoice on an ordered '13 SD. No X plan, no A plan. Nothing. This may not be true in all instances, but generally speaking, it costs a dealership about 4% below invoice for trucks. It's called holdback.
You should easily be able to get $500 below invoice. Take the rebates and Ford financing, that should get you another $3-4K off.
Sell your truck outright. My '03 with a 5.4 was gone in 2 days.

Thats what I would do, anyway.

Thanks for the comments. Right now It look like there is a $2,000 rebate through Ford and an additional $1,000 rebate with Ford Financing.

So realistically Im think I ask for $700 below invoice, putting me right at $39,000 then - the $3,000 in rebates....

Im kinda surprised they aren't offering better rebates and incentives. Im considering waiting till next month to see what the new Rebates are gonna be. IIf I can hold out till the 13's start hitting the lots, the discounts should get pretty big...

Yeah it is very hard to beat X plan unless the vehicle has sat for a long time, and with rebates taken off the X plan price and the no BS in and out purchase it really is a no brainer. Go to Truecar.com and see what trucks just like it are selling for in your area, I bet $36,800 is on the deal side.

You can always use Ford financing to get the rebates then refinance in a few months with a local bank if they can give a better rate.

Ok so through corresponding with the dealer over E-mail today, They have offered me the truck at Dealer Invoice @ $39,700.

Im sceduled to go in person and meet them tonight. Im gonna ask for $39,000. That's only $750 under invoice and now I already know there are people getting $750 under invoice on a 2013 so if they dont wanna make my deal I'll be able to walk away pretty easily. Especially when I know where the truck is located and I'll just make a little weekend trip and deal directly with that particular dealer... Plus, as time goes on, discounts are only going to get better....

Thanks for teh comments!

Negotiate the price compared to invoice first. Then take rebates off to get true cost. Rebates come from Ford, not the dealer. Only the original price compared to invoice cost the dealer money. Anyone can say they got a better deal, but when you wrap a trade in it gets all muddy. Work the trade price first on any buy. If they wont give trade price first its a guarantee you lost a few bucks somewhere. Go to Kelly Blue Book at KBB.com to get invoice price. The hold back sometimes is related to units moved and harder to negotiate into.

OK so here's the update.

Went in last night after work and they offered my dealer Invoice of $39,700 then they would take off the rebates. putting me at $36,700.

I said I wanted to get the price down very close to D-Plan price which is about $1,500 below invoice. Salesman said, that probably isn't possible and I said well do the best you can and we will see where we are. He goes back and says they can't sell even $1.00 below invoice.....AND he informs that there is actually only $2000 in rebates available from Ford and not the original $3,000 that they had told me....

So I said no thanks.

I'm gonna wait till next month and see what kind of rebates pop up on the 2012s.

Tough negotiator! Hope the truck is still available for you to work them down in price. Plus...the 6.2L never see's the deals of the 6.7L PSD...so keep that in mind.

If I understand the situation...the dealer you are working with does not even have the truck on the lot? If that is true, then I think they are working a good deal. You never did mention the trade...and what they offered you?

Good luck either way,

biz

Price on vehicles sitting in lot llonger may actually go up. The pay overhead and the longer there, the more overhead. Not sure if its interest on the truck or how it works, but there is a bottom line on all and they can sit on a 2012 until 2013 before taking a lose.
