i have never tried to rebuild an engine. My knowledge is limited about rebuilding. however, my dad gave me a 64 f-100 and i would like to rebuild the engine. WHERE DO I BEGIN?
I am not a mechanic, but a lot of guys on here know their stuff. I can tell you they are going to want details! What engine is in it? Is it running? If it is not running, will it at least turn over? Just to give you an idea. You will gain tons of info on this forum, but you only get as good an answer as the question allows for.
Engine runs great. i thought about starting with an intake manifold/ new card/aircleaner. or should i start from the bottom up? i dont want high performance from it. just want to clean things up and make it look nice.
ford f100 292 original engine oil bath. i have headers on it other than that its stock.
I would keep it stock..the 292 wasnt the most popular engine to build up...but additionally given the aerodynamics of these trucks, little will be gained IMO other then a deflated wallet, higher fuel bill and a pretty looking engine...which that can be done in stock configuration...
The oil bath air cleaners do do a good job of filtering the air taken in...its just got to be serviced at appropriate intervals
If it runs great...keep it as is...if its not broke, dont fix it :-)
yah its not broke at all runs great! my dad drives it about 500 miles a year and i do about 100 in a year so there really is no need but, i for some reason feel that its time for a little more power and i know for a fact that the carb is going bad. carb is about 15 years old and i want to go from a 2 barl. to a 4 barl.
rebuilding your 2 bbl would be a better thing IMO...pulling off a Y block intake...based on my experience requires a head to be removed...clearance issues which I was sadly surprised at...
thats my biggest fear with this change.. i was basicly assuming that if i got a new low rise manifold that i would not have to worry about any clearance issues...
There is a book called rebuilding Y's or something like that. There is also a shop manual that has all the toque specs and things like that for the truck. Nobody here is actually going to list step by step every little thing that needs to be done. Your best bet is to get the books and find a friend who knows about engines.
I am not looking for a step by step. just trying to get some people to suggest different things or problems to watch out for or quality parts or cheap parts to stay away from. Mainly just information to asorb..
if the engine is fine, leave it alone. otherwise you're not going to be able to drive it for months after your pull it, tear it down, and fumble through your first rebuild. and at the end- it may not go well...and now you've really got problems.
but i'm not shooting you down completely-
my advice: find a junkyard engine. tear that bugger down six ways from sunday, and learn everything you can. then put it in the truck.
if it doesn't work...you can put the original engine right back in, and keep on driving.
