does anyone know of the best filter set up for a 90 7.3L is? are they all semi compatible i found a sinister one made for a 6.0 and didnt know if it would work.
im running a 4070 coolent filter from napa. it has no SCA precharge because i maintain my coolent myself. you can get filters with diffrent amounts of charge. the filter base is Napa PN. 4019. the rest i just made myself
i run:
Napa Filter Head #4019 & Penray Need Release Coolant Filter #NF2088
after first running two blank napa/wix filters to remove the factory sand casting.
nothing wrong with running normal coolant filters that "dump all" sca's when installed.but you'll need to keep testing with strips,to keep it in check.by the time you buy strips, extra coolant filters and or liquid sca's it could very well be about the same price as just buying the need release every 15 months anyway.i did the test strip joy,and they expired before i could use 'em all.didn't get my $ worth from them.wanted a different solution.
Go through wix they are exactly the same at half the cost. Mine is as simple as it gets. I moved a relay, and mounted it to the pass fender right in front of the hood hinge.
These are older pics. I have now added a trans fluid t-stat so I removed the heater hose tee to the bottom of the radiator and re-routed the hoses and it looks even cleaner. I'll try to add a new pic. A lot of guys add shut off valves for changing the filter, but with it located here, there is no need. It is at the highest point in the system. I can remove my filter, and lose maybe a quarter cup of coolant. I even solves that problem by putting a plastic bag over the filter before removing it. I can pour the overflow right back into my expansion tank. Just make sure there is no pressure in your system first! So you know, supply is from the head port (goes to inlet side of filter head) outlet goes to the water pump.
I don't know how much it helps, but it sure can't hurt.

Good luck,
Mac.
thats the same with mounting it off the fuel filter bracket. i didnt use any valves, i just loose the small amount thats in the top of the filter.
I am still on my first Wix. The truck has sat for a while after a top end rebuild, but is back on the road now. I used fleet guard pre-charged coolant, so I won't need charged filters for a while. I plan to run two Wix filters to clear the system and then upgrade.
Thank you guys i guess i am going to go the same route and build my own seems like it may be cheaper that way to, by mounting it on passenger fender is their still enough room to easily service the filter or did you make some modifications?
I can get it off pretty easily. Hold the filter head above a filter, so you know you have enough room to remove it then mark it and screw it right into the fender with some large SMS. Make sure you have clearance for the hood hinge, and remember the head port goes to inlet side of filter head, outlet goes to water pump. Here are some current pics:
As you can see I was able to free up a lot of space over the fender well by putting it here... I'm thinking custom cold air intake??? I need to get rid of that factory POS. I'm even considering a hood scoop for it??? Hmmm.
thank you guys that was alot of help, and MacGyver im in the same boat as you i have been doiun alot of searchin around on best intake setup, best way i have found so far is either cowl induction and make slight mods to stock filter housing such as cut out metal ring and plate on inside that restricts flow, or option B, make my own.
