Early bird 99 245,000 miles 7.3. New glow plugs 3 yrs ago. Got down in the fourty's last night and was raining and cool all day. Didn't get above 60 degrees. Sat all day until 6:30 at night when I fired it up to go to church. Could tell it wasn't firing on all cylinders which it does when it is cold sometimes but normally straights out after a a little time or if I drive it straightens out within a few blocks. This time however I drove 3 or 4 miles before it ran normal. I stopped and cycled the glow plugs three times twice because that normally helps. But nothing helped. Finally did kick in but like I mentioned it took quite a while. You guys have any ideas?
Sounds like an injector or more that isn't flowing until warm. You could pull the VC's and start it cold to see which ones aren't flowing. Or try plugging it in for a couple hours and seeing if it resolves it too.
Normally in the winter when I have it plugged in the problem isn't there. But it is only fall. It does seem like since my truck originally came from Texas that it is angry for bringing it to the snow belt . I sure hope my injectors are not giving up the ghost. $$$$
Technically you are above the norm for the poppet seat wear to start "showing" itself, many start showing signs of this at half life around 150,000 miles.
So is that what we are saying is I need injectors? I need this truck to be reliable before winter. I plow commercially on the side and can't afford to have this truck break down. So I have 2 months. Is this what needs done? If so which injectors would you guys recommend for a e99? With newer injectors should i replace the HPOP, LPOP, injector cups also? I am crying at the thought right now. This sounds like a small loan is gonna be required.
UPDATE:
This is a list I went with off Riffraff, please tell me if needed or just a luxury.
Stage 1 injectors(anybody know the difference in the stage 1 and the new stage 1 injectors besides $600?)
T500 HPOP
HPOP lines
HPOP tool
Melting LPOP
FX regulated return
If you are going to run stage 1's you will need tuning for the injectors to act properly..as far as the LPOP,HPOP, I would run some test befor replacing...stage 1 single shot injectors require less oil than stock...
DP tuner has remanufactured stock injectors for 950$ with old cores turned in or new injectors for about $1800. Dalton is not too far from Augusta. I might be able to help depending on what time frame you do them. Do you have a scanner or Auto Enginuity?

i am having the same exact problem. almost every day depending on the temperature. the truck runs on six or seven cylinders and after a minute or so of driving, it'll pick it right up. i have 2000000 on my truck so i guess injector failure is expected. seeing how your having the same exact symptoms i'd say it looks like i'll be getting injectors before i thought i was going to.
So are the stage 1's better then stock then? If so will a PCM with a single dp-tuner work? The tests for the HPOP and the LPOP, are they done with the auto Enginuity? If so is there anybody in NW Indiana that I could hook up with? The single shots are $1,000 after the cores are returned so that is the same as the stock ones. What are the advantages of the single shots or stock ones then?

You're kind of jumping to conclusions, or extremes aren't you?
I simply stated that injectors are a possibility, not that my "thoughts" were the be all end all...
Have you removed the valve covers, to ensure there is an issue?
Any further troubleshooting to determine if this is even the case?
BUZZ test loud and crisp?
How long since oil change?
EBPV not sticking?
There are more options to what could be causing your issue, further diagnostics is needed, rather than some symptoms, and an "internet" diagnosis from a person you may or may not even now, or has even seen first hand the issue.
I wasn't trying to jump to conclusions. Just need to have the truck in top shape before winter. I need to get the AE I guess. I will have to start there. If I take it anywhere to get a buzz test I am sure I will have half of a AE paid for by then.
It depends on the shop and person, really I use to be able to use a local mechanic and charged about 25-30 bucks to run what I was looking for or asking to be done.
You can pull the Valve Covers without a charge though, and watch the oil flow. You could measure solenoid resistances, and armature clearances if you want to dig into them as well.
Maybe try a thread for anyone with AE in the NW Indiana area and see, never hurts to ask right?
If you remove the Valve covers, and allow the conditions to be the same as when you are getting an issue. In your case sounds like at cold oil temps. At the 11 o'clock position on each injector their is an oil discharge spout.
With the VC's off and with those conditions causing issue, start the truck, maybe record a video to upload or review as well, and watch how much oil is flowing from each spout. It's not a ton, probably around a teaspoon, but they should ALL be flowing and about the same guesstimate of an amount.
If my "thoughts" are correct you will find that at least one, maybe more, injector is not discharging any oil until the oil warms up.
