Quick A/C question.

My A/C wont enguage on its own. I have to manually tap the front of the pulley plate for it to lock in. I removed the wiring harness and checked for any shafing and burnt contacts. All is good. I put it back on and it worked! Tried it this morning and its back to the way it was. I heard that the gap between the pulley and plate need to be a certian distance. Or is it not working properly because it may need a recharge? No oil or residue around the A/C. Looks bran new to me.

If for some reason the system is seeing either a high or low pressure the switches will not allow the compressor to engage. However, If you can tap on the pulley and cause it to engage then it sounds like the air gap on the clutch plate is too much. Do a search for the air gap and there are written procedures to fix that. I did mine a while back and has certainly improved its operation.

I have found this SpringerPop's Compressor Clutch Air Gap

Only problem is that I dont have enough clerance to get the socket and wrench to reach the nut. Keep hitting the overfill bottle. Need a shorter socket.

You could take the bottle off. Not but a couple small screws that hold it in.
