I have an '85 Bronco II with a 2.8. In the winter after I warm it up it will not run on its own. I have to keep my foot on the gas to keep it going or it will cut off. Around March when the weather starts to warm up it does fine. It runs great all through the summer until around November when it starts to get cold again. It's probably some sort of choke problem but I've had the carburetor rebuilt and used choke cleaner on it and the problem continued. The weather's warm now so it runs good, but I would like to fix the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Sounds like a simple choke adjustment is needed. There should be three screws on the cover that holds the choke bi-metal spring on the right(passenger) side of carb. With engine cold-at or near 65 degrees air temp, loosen these three screws and turn the plastic(bakelight) housing clockwiseuntil choke plate starts to close just a little, stop turning here an tighten screws back up, that should put you really close to being adjusted correctly.
Some of the older 2 barrell carbs had the words "lean" and "rich" embossed on the housing with an arrow showing which way to turn for appropriate function. You want to turn it towards 'rich". Once again, cold engine, only enough to start choke plate to move.
