I have a 1992 F250 7.3L i ahve at it 10 yrs with 200,00 miles on it and is strong as heck. My question is when i would go to start the truck the wait to start light would come on and i would here clicking. Then the light would go out and the truck would start. A few months ago once in a while i would trurn the key the wait to start light would come on. and there would be no clicking. and it wouldnt start. then i would turn the key off then on and it would say wait to start and then start clicking. then the light would go out and it would start. It started to occur more and more. i recently put the truck up to do some body work (Getting the cab welded). I started it once a week doing the above process. i would drive it or let it run about 30min. i parted it in the drive and now it wont start. The wait to start light wont come one i here no clicking. I have checked all the fused and looked for info online. Idk what to do. I know allitel about working on cars, just enough to be dangerous but not alot about deisels.
any help would be greatly appreciated.. Ty
i definately need to get it running before it starts getting cold. I love this truck and dont wanna just dump it, I was gonna have to do alot of body work and if its expensive mech. work that needs done idk if itll be worth it.
Sounds like your glow plug controller has gone out. You can replace it without a lot of trouble, or you can bypass it and hook up a manual button -- see this thread for more information (you've got the newer style glow plugs and controller).
TY ill try that this weekend. I hope yr right it looks easy to replace. is that why i dont here clicking and the wts light wont come on? It turns over fast. Ill give it a try
Do you get power to all of your accessories when you turn the key and the GP light doesn't come on? I just want to rule out an ignition switch before you buy GP controller.
Here are the pics, is this the glow plug relay or controller? Is it the samething? Advance auto sells what looks like the top part for like$30 so idk. It is on the passenger fender. It looks different than the link above. Is this the new type or old type. The new ones are like $100 aand another type is $30. it doesnt look like the type Autozone has listed for it.

That is your starter relay. The GP controller is behind the air pan. It either has a black plastic cover on it or you will see a relay looking device with a squiggly wire.

this is probably a free fix.
if this was happening to my truck, the first place i would start to inspect, would be the ground wire on the GP relay.clean it's contact point on both ends, even possibly just replacing/running a devoted, new, clean ground wire.
if no luck,it's probably the relay going out on ya.but typically, relays just quit on ya.your symptoms appear to be a failing, ground.
Hey i've heard you can use the GP relay off of an 86 f-350 to replace yours the price diff. is like $70 cheaper and works great the new one comes with the whole control switch and all u need is the relay.
so what would you choose, big pricew diff, i dont wanna just get a relay and the controller be bad too, how do i know if its the whole thing or just the relay
well if i had the money i'd get the whole thing if i thought the control was bad too, have you tried to test the relay? the hot side will read 12v on the multi meter with key off the glow plug side witch has a weird z looking dill won't show anything with the key off but if u turn the key to the on position where it would say wait to start u will get a reading of 7-9 v because of voltage drop it won't read 12 but u only have about 10 seconds to test before it would shut off power to the GP side of the relay. check your ground and all wires first. you can jump the relay with 12 AWG wire from the hot side to the GP side and see if you get power to th GP.
take off your breather (air filter ) you will see it it looks like the starter relay on the passenger fender you showed a pic of before except it sets horizontal not vertical its in the back where you would expect to see a distributor on a gas motor.
