Hello in my quest for another Bronco, I wonder if anyone knows what year the Bronco was first produced with the E40D transmission? Also was the E40D used only on 5.8 powered Broncos? Also the Broncos that auto locking hubs did they all have push button 4X4, how do the hubs work and how do you unlock them? What transmission is preferable to find in a Bronco, the AOD, AODE, or E40D? Thanks
I've seen an '87 pickup with an E4OD, so that's probably when it was offered in Broncos. The AOD-E was never offered in trucks - the truck version was called the 4R70W and started in '94 or '95. Any of them can be built strong, but the E4OD/4R100 is certainly the strongest (assuming it has been rebuilt or is newer than '95). At least some years offered the 5.0L with the E4OD, and probably the 4.9L, too.
Auto hubs were offered with the manual t-case, and they work (sometimes ) off the difference in rotation between the spindles and the stub shafts. They lock when the stub rotates ~1 turn, and they unlock every time the stub & wheel change direction. http://www.webphotos.com/list_photos...&smi=1&a=66946
I don't know when the E4OD was first used but I can help with the other questions. I have a 90 with a E4OD and 5.0. Plus it does not have push button 4WD. I got a shifter on the floor. And unfortunately it has auto hubs.
Our 96 was factory equipped with auto hubs and a manual T'case shifter; the hubs blew out on a sand dune @ only 30k miles despite frequent maint (cleaning and lt. lube).
