So, it was working fine and then I added some aftermarket gauges (tach, water temp.) didn't fuss w anything in the og cluster. now the gauge reads full all the time. I wish I could believe it, but I know I'm burnin it up quick. What could I have done to cause this?
It got shorted somehow to ground. Reach behind the seat and unplug it from the sending unit. Does it return to empty? No? Then it's shorted somewhere along the line.
If unplugging it fixes it, then it's the sending unit.
More current is going through the gauge than should. You may have shorted the low side of the gauge to ground while you were messing about with the aftermarket instruments but you also may have tapped your new gauges into the fuel gauge causing a current draw.
Where did you tap for power, lights?
Pluck the wire from the sender as Freightrain suggests. If your fuel gauge is still plugged or reading high, unhook all your new stuff.
If your oil pressure and temperature gauges read high you may have hacked into something that disables or damages the CVR.
