I'm swapping out my 3 speed manual for a C4 in my '73 F-100. The truck has a 9" rear. The C4 has a longer tailhousing then the manual, and no bolt hole in the output shaft for a bolt on yoke like my 2 piece driveshaft presently uses, which would require major mods to my present 2 piece driveshaft.
I figured out that I could use a single driveshaft with a normal C4 yoke on one end and 9" yoke on the other, but it would require a shaft that is about 71" long between u-joint centers (just about 6 feet). Is that too long for a safe driveshaft? Has Ford ever made a shaft that long?
Or is there another approach to my present shaft? Anybody ever done this? Thanks, Polkat.
