superchip programmer

guy near me sellin his superchip 1865
SUPERCHIPS® 1865 - Ford F-250 1999-2009 Flashpaq Tuner

he says its new for $150 since he just wants to get rid of it
selling for $350 new evidently, but wanted to make sure its still worth it for "my needs"

first off my truck is a dog with a 5.4 and 35's running 3.73's or whatever my ratio is but i know it aint no 4.30's....(never cared to look)

so i would like more getup and go, having the tranny drop down to keep up with highway traffic on a daily basis is getting old.

would this be ok for me?
yes i know there are probably better and all, but for my situation, and the price that was offered to me, WOULD YOU??

thanks

No, no and no.

If you want a performance tune, call 5-Star and get a custom tune.

BUT

Before you do that, change your differential ratio. Much more bang for the buck. You went from 32 inch tires to a 35 inch tire. That is like changing your 3.73 differential to a 3.41 differential. You need a 4.08 (OK< call it 4.10) to return to the effective stock ratio. If you intend on keeping the tires, I would go to a 4.56 ratio, which would be about the same as a 4.10 ratio with the stock tires.

How hard/expensive is it to regear though? It seems like the OP is looking for a cheaper solution than regearing his differentials. If its cheaper than i expect though and there is a little wiggle room for budget I would definitely change out the gears like redford said first.

Regearing will be $600-1000 in parts per axle, plus labor. But the Flashpack only advertises 30-ish HP increase, gears would actually be felt while the tuner probably won't make a huge difference given the tire size he's running.

I'd tell him $75 and try to get it for under a hundred bucks. Most people pay more for a air filter that give them less hp. Regearing would probably be the best seat of the pants though.

I guess what I am saying is putting a performance tune on the OPs vehicle will not solve his issues.

so i would like more getup and go, having the tranny drop down to keep up with highway traffic on a daily basis is getting old.
Regearing or reverting to a stock size tire will cure this. A Super Chip tuner will make a little more power, but not enough to overcome the bigger tires.

ok guys roger all that, and it really all makes perfect sense. if i want to roll on 35's with my current setup i either have to suck it up and deal with being a slug on the open highways or suck it up and spend the $2000 to gear the truck correctly.

only thing is if i had 2 grand to throw at a vehicle i would throw it at my weekend warrior b4 i through it at my dd

so looks like im gunna deal with drivin in the right lanes...
guess im ok with that, and glad my SD has a beefy tranny in that case.

thanks again everyone

It's gonna' take in the neighborhood of $2000.00 to $2400.00 to regear to a more suitable ratio.

With the tall tires I would go with at least the 4.56, or even the 4.88 if you're towing heavy. With stock tires that measure around 31" to 32" a 4.30 would be about right or a 4.56 if your towing heavy.

We went with 4.30's in our '09 F-250 SD 5.4 because we do some limited empty non-towing miles and it was the best money I've ever spent on a vehicle enhancement. I have no experience with the tuners, but our regear made a totally different truck of our F-250. If you can swing it the regear is the way to go.

You will be amazed the difference!

offer him 100 bucks and tweak the Superchip settings when you get it. I have a custom SCT and i dont like the settings at all! I put my old 1714 Superchip back in tweaked the settings to my likings again and i cant be happier with it! I see absolutely no difference in the trans settings on the SCT, it suppose to hold the TQ longer and better but i feel nor see any difference at all. And power wise my 87 tune Superchip is way more powerful then my "custom tune SCT"
