I am the proud owner of a 97 MAF EFI truck and and considering rebuilding my motor no that I am approaching 200k. I work at a speed shop and have been scouring catalogs for parts available on my truck. Slim pickins. I am considering swaping off the factory heads and intake to install trick flow intake and head combo with a fuel rail and edelbrock intake elbow with a mustang throttle body. The throttle body elbow from edelbrock appears to have a provision for i icv. Anyone think the factory maf efi system will support this kind of set up. Also The intake selection for intakes with injector bosses is limited to single plane intakes. is anyone familiar with a dual plane intake with injector bosses. I would like to keep the factory efi as I do live in an emission area and the onboard diagnostic port is needed to scan the motor at testing. There is no air injection on this model and I would ideally have a dual long tube headers to universal cats.
I cant help you much but Header wise i would go with L&L headers. Pretty good headers IMO. not bad to put on and seen a impressive improvement. ya aftermarket is pretty non existent. What kind of head and intake combo are you looking at?
How do you have a CA 460 with no AIR? No advice on heads and intake, except that you will notice a drastic increase in power with any aftermarket heads compared to the "necked-down" originals.
I put the banks power pack on mine, left the cat, egr, and air pump off, and I love it. You could say I have the anti-CA version. They have held up very well on and off the country roads of rural Minnesota. Sounds awesome too. I know the banks kit comes with everything to fit a california truck too.
Well..... i thought i didnt have air injection until i crawled underneath and found it was injecting air into the cat instead of the manifolds. Yes you will still have to have gaskets on the headers. I would suggest this set of gaskets Header Gaskets 460 V8 1988-98
I kept burning out gaskets and bolts working loose. i put these on and i have had a problem with bolts slipping lose or getting a leak. $33 is alot for a set of gaskets but i hate having to do rework again. Back to the first post. what kind of heads were you looking into?
If you are going to use banks torque tube headers, you do not need gaskets. I have been running mine that way for 5,000 miles and have had zero leaks.
They have a 5/8" thick flange, so as long as your exhuast port faces are clean and flat you will not have any leaks. Most headers don't have that thick of a flange and may require a gasket.
The air injection on my pickup pumped into the back of the stock manifolds and into the cat. I have a 3" round inlet cat.
I purchased the banks powerpack kit with bungs for the air injection and the egr. Even though I am not using them I figured I should get them in case Minnesota starts requiring emissions testing where I live. I bought stainless plugs from rjm injection to block off the bungs on my torque tubes.
I could have bought cheaper headers and fabbed up my own exhaust for a lot less than the power pack costs, but getting the kit was easy. Everything was bolt on. If you know what you are doing, you could easily have the swap done on a saturday.
The l&l's are nice, but they are 4 into two where the banks are a nice mid length tri y design. If you look at pictures of l&l's after a period of time they get very rusty.
I don't have anything against them, but my banks kit was so easy to install. You get what you pay for with headers.
