I recently purchased a 2003 f350 6.0. I've owned it for about three days and when after excelerating and then letting off I heard a squeel / high pitch come from the engine. After pulling the turbo intake tube off I noticed that the turbine was rubbing the side and the shaft has a lot of play. 1- which turbo do I have T-? garrett, 2- pros and cons to a rebuild kit or purchase a new turbo, if new wich one?
Depending on what is damaged inside you may or may not be able to rebuild it. Ford does sell the center rotating section but i think its like 1000 bucks and i think a new turbo is around 1500. As far as which turbo you have im not sure what if any differences there are from one year to the next. There is some really good info in the tech folder on the turbo and some detailed cutaway photos so you can see how they work. There are some upgrades for the turbo from the earlier year engine builds like upgraded oil supply line and oil drain tube that you can do while you are at it. You will find that the guys here are most helpful and im sure others will chime in and give you more specific details than i can and welcome to FTE...
if the impeller has hit the housing I would suggest replacing the unit. you do have a garrett turbo. there is only one that will fit an 03. use the search function for suggestions on replacment options.
