A local tire store used to sell Remington wide whites. Bought a set of L78-15's for a 1955 Lincoln ragtop for less than 400 bucks. 'Course that was 20 years ago, so the price has prolly gone up.
The thins have more white wall then you think. Ever see one that's hit a curb? They're just like those raised white letter black walls, under the black rubber is white rubber.
Tire shops can grind off the black rubber, so the thins could have 2 or 3 inches of white from their outermost edge to where the wheel fits.
Do you have to have radials? The bias plys are more nostalgic and about $100 per tire less. $147 ea for G78x15 at Vintage Ford in Sacramento. http://www.vintageford.com/sect_search.cfm?Line=Hot Rod&Category=Tires
I tried radials a few years ago and found it very hard to turn the steering wheel. When I went back to bias-ply tires, it was a lot easier on the arms.
Good luck, Jag
Also, I predict that the high cost of tires will drop when the artifially induced price of returns to normal.
