Starter Engagement Issue
Have had an intermittent starter engagement issue (grinds when trying to start). Wait for starter to stop spinning and it will engage normally.
Had the starter out to repair my dipstick oil leak and when I went to start, it ground on first try, waited and tried the second time and still ground.
Pulled and reinstalled starter and all was well...or so I thought.
About every 10-20 starts it won't engage and grind. I can bar the engine just a hair and it will engage normally.
I suspect flattened or rounded teeth on the flex plate. Can this be repaired by filing or otherwise repairing the teeth on the flex plate?
Thanks!
My van is doing the exact same thing. Every 15-20 starts the drive gear doesn't engage. I looked at the ring gear and saw the spot where it happens, but was afraid to try to correct it by filing or grinding the teeth.
I'd sure like to fix it without pulling the transmission, especially since I'm selling the van when the title paperwork comes through on the new truck.
