i have just gotten a warn M12000 winch for my 1999 f-250 truck which tree saver to get? i do not have a pulley block but may get one some day so i need a tree saver that will work for it. most dont go over 26000 lbs that is close to 24000 not much safety factor for bad angels or other things that will weaken the strap. i would like one made in the USA and longer then 20" so i could use it to extend the line if needed. i dont do a lot of mudding but would like something that will work right and not hurt someone.
Forget about the commercially available "tree savers." They are very overpriced and not strong enough for a 12k winch doubled with a ****** block.
Look for a lift sling in a 3-4" width about 6-8' long. Id imagine Grainger or Mcmaster Carr would have them or if you know anyone that works with cranes you would be surprised in what osha makes us throw away
A 6' strap will get around a 22" tree and a 8' strap will fit around a 30" tree. Thats pretty damn big no matter where you live.
A "tree saver" is a strap. Its commercially sold by numerous 4wd suppliers. I could a shat less about a tree also. The reason id use one is to save your winch cable.
If you put a towel or t-shirt/coat on the cable it will hit the dirt the second it pops.
Check out Buba Rope. They had a add in summit racing. I looked at there web site. Tree savers are cheap and you can double or triple them up. I also use a 4" or 6" strap with my winch. Both are rated several times my 12,000# Warn. I broke a 3" a long time ago after many years of hard use. So I replaced it with a 4" Take a look at the buba stuff and tells us what you thnk.
I'm thinking about getting a spare strap or rope because my kid has a truck now.
Ive got a Keeper brand 4"x30' and a 6"x30' ****** strap and also a rope thats about 1.25-1.5" diameter and maybe 20' long now. The rope stretches quite a bit and works better when it doesnt pop. Ive never had trouble with the 6" strap but im on my second or third 4" strap in the past 10 years.
4" x 30' yellow poly strap with loops at both ends. Anything else is a waste of money. 3/4" D Shackle both end to the winch line, or, if you have a friend, wrap the 4" strap around the tree three revolutions and have him hold the end. Then it can be undone and attached to another tree without removing the D Shackle.
