So, am I right that the short answer here is, if I want to use the Ford steering gear from a 73-79 on my '66, if I use the pittman arm and linkages too it should be OK?

Dunno... that's the first time ya've mentioned a 66 and I am not informed as to the compatibility/swappability of the 73-79 components to pre-67s.
I have a power steering box out of a 67 HCE-G. I am putting on my 65. I bought it without the pitman arm. Now I am having trouble finding the correct one to match my application. Numbers guy? Any ideas?
QUOTE=Old Coyote;12268033]Ever get this sorted out? I'm curious too as I plan a similar swap (ps for standard). But my intention is to leave the pittman arm on the ps box and attach it to my steering linkage. I'm hoping it's the same for the ps and stndard steering gear on that end (as it appears from these posts it's different on the end that attaches to the box). If my hope is correct, and the pittman arm for the ps gear will attach to my linkage, maybe you could go that route too if you have the arm for the ps gear.[/QUOTE]
Wow, you've been doing some digging for info in your search, eh David? That's good though, since this thread has lots of good info.
Sounds like it's still inconclusive in some situations though. Interested to hear the answer to your question.
Good luck. Always fun swapping stuff from different years!
Great discussion and super help from ND as usual. I am just glad that my old truck is 4x4 F250 HD, and my p/s swap was from the ground up, so I could choose the box, linkage, pitman, and drag links to suite my preferences. Trying to mix 'n match with what the factory did, can be a bucket of worms once you open it, and start searching for parts that aren't available any more.
I happily followed the trail breakers ideas and suggestions, on this forum, and while it is not stock, as none existed, it works fine, and as I refer to it, "Better than factory". I found that the Bendix 'Canned Ham' pump, from the old Econoline 250's, works well, and there are plenty of them out there.
Good luck to all the 2wd guys and sorting out the worms...
Right you are amigo, and they mount easy, fill easy, and have a great dependability rating. Plus, the mount brackets for my old 300, were available in old stock at a number of Ford dealers.. across the country. A dealer in San Diego, found them for me, ordered them, no problems... I am very happy with how it worked out for me...
