Fuel filter/seperator conversion ?'s

So first, hello all! I've been trolling around here for a while and have gotten a lot of great advice through my searching but now I have specific questions. I have a 1985 F250 2WD NA 6.9 and fuel delivery has been quite an issue. I replaced the mechanical fuel pump with a Duralift, took out my water separator and will be doing injectors/return lines in the next week or so (no apparent leaks right now but no matter how the timing is set, there's missing and smoke). Also worth noting, there's no coolant in the oil, no oil in the coolant, no coolant usage and no excessive oil usage (some but nothing major).

My questions are these:
  1. Can I use the fuel filter/water separator/fuel heater assembly from a 1989-93 IDI? Or is there a better answer?
  2. What is the purpose of the fat spot in the fuel line with a wire coming out of it on the hard line that goes into the current fuel filter housing?
Thanks guys!

Fat spot is fuel heater....

You can use any filter/water separator you want...I just went and bought a mount and a spin on water/fuel separator and mounted it on the drivers side firewall where the oem one was...

no problems whatsoever...

Also, kid of what I thought. My hard line with the fuel heater is kind of trashed (a bit kinked in one spot) so I'm thinking of junk-yarding one of the newer housings to get rid of that line and have a one-location fuel filter/separator... I mounted my duralift on the inside of the PS fender - more or less where the mechanical pump was - so I'd also just have one soft line from the pump to the filter housing.

Thanks!!

Just my opinion...I think I would put the water/fuel separator in line before the Duralift and use a Motorcraft fuel filter at the mount near the alternator...

What would be the advantage to using a separate water separator? All the new ones have them in one unit...

1. to protect fuel pump, the electric ones

2. prefilter the fuel before second filter which should filter fuel to a lower micron size, to help protect IP and helps keep injectors cleaner

Just my thoughts
