Pipe Diameter???

Here is the situation...1968 F-250 390 with the aux tank under the bed between the frame rails. My local guy suggests, after the Y-pipe, a 3" single pipe into a turbo (unknown brand..forgot to ask) to avoid the tank. The exhaust will exit behind the tire, right side. My question is....Is this too big of a pipe? From what I understand, it is possible to have too large of a diameter pipe. Any light you can shed on this for me would be great. Thanks in advance. BTW, this is currently a stock motor, but I am having a new (and improved) 390 built as we speak.

No, 3" is fine. I had a 76 F250 with a 390 and I ran dual 3" pipes. Most of the aftermarket catback systems you see on the market are 3". The diameter that matters the most is where the collector dumps into your Y. Its at the end of the header there that determines whether you will lose low end torque, to gain high end horsepower.

Headers + true dual exhaust. Why would you want to go with any other? You'll need a couple 90* mandel bent pieces to get the driver's side pipe moved over to the passenger side. I'd go with 2 1/2" diameter. I wouldn't have it go over the rear axle either. Most exhaust shops use a ram type bender that actually crushes the tubing in the bends reducing it. Use a couple more 90's or 45's and shoot it out the side before the rear tire.
