Catback and emissions test question
I want to replace my stock muffler with an aftermarket catback, probably Gibson SS swept side due to lower inside cab noise, but my mechanic recommended against it. He thought that there could be an effect on the EGR reading backpressure and fouling up the emissions test.
Gibson states their mufflers provide a 5% restriction and a 3" pipe as compared with 34% restriction and 2 1/2" for standard systems, as a rule. As I understand it, less restriction and wider pipes are a good thing up to a point by allowing better exhaust gas flow out. More power and a cool sound.
Regardless of which maker of catbacks you choose, are there any FTE opinions out there on the emmisions issue.
I'm mainly trying to improve performance a bit without a tremendous increase in sound ... so that's why Gibson.

I have had a Gibson swept side stainless cat-back system on a
Ranger since December. I have had no problems with it throwing
a CEL, and therefore PASSED the OBD-II emissions test back in
March (Durham County, N.C.).
I think you will be happy with the Gibson!!!
