Max Towing Temps

I have a good report on my 116K Ex with 6.0L. I now have gauges to watch ECT, EOT, TFT, and EGT.

We recently towed our big travel trailer (about 10,500 lb and 11'8" tall) from Tulsa to Phoenix. In Oklahoma, we towed at 65 - 70 mph at 104 - 106F. On long uphill pulls, we would see the following maximum temps:

ECT - 226F
EOT - 229F
TFT - 190F
EFT - 1150F

Later, when towing in Arizona on some very long steep grades (6% for about 3 miles) at 98F, the only temperature that was a bit alarming was the EGT. I saw the following maximums:

ECT - 226F
EOT - 229F
TFT - 198F
EFT - 1400F *

* when I saw 1400F, I dropped out of cruise and reduced the speed enough to reduce EGT to <1200F.

My next upgrade may be a less restrictive exhaust system (Banks or MBRP) to lower EGT when towing those big hills.

Comments from the experts?

All those mods and you still have stock pipes?

I thought you'd already had a full 4 inch exhaust system

That would definitely be a wise investment, especially if you tow programmed.

MBRP makes and awesome kit for the 6.0

Except for the 1400 EGT, your temps and deltas are decent. Your water temp is pretty warm, so you might want to clean the cooling stack, and/or change the water pump. That's a good load to be pulling, so higher temps up tough grades are to be expected.

Mbpr 4" cat back for under $500.00 mandrel bends, slips right in! Would help the egt's and the cool down time.

I know I "had" a V10...but the max engine coolant temps I saw with a STOCK cooling system was 215*...once you hit 213...the cooling fan kicks into TURBO mode which drops temps 10* almost instantly...

Trans temps...well those on the 4R100 will pretty much follow engine times but not as high...those are ambient +100 fairly reliably...

I wasn't pulling as much as you...my TT was 9000#'s...

I now have to learn about EGT's on my CAT...so i'm in learn mode...

Keep in mind that I was quoting maximum temperatures that occurred under a few scenarios for brief periods of time.

Generally, it was rare to see ECT above 215F or EOT above 220F. Flat running at 70mph, I usually saw ECT/EOT at about 205/210 with TFT at 185F.

I think it is EGT that is the main concern.

My biggest concern with MBRP is the "drone" that may occur. Banks does a great deal of salesmanship on this point, claiming they won't have a "drone" at highway speeds.

Any Banks owners out there? Those of you with MBRP, what is your experience with noise?

I cant remember but the jist was you defuel but dont really know it so you use more throttle raising egts and temps even more.

A 6.0 will start to defuel at 221 ECT or 253 EOT. The power limiting starts out subtle, and will become more pronounced if the temps continue to climb.

I don't have a noticable drone with my MBRP, cat or no cat. If I'm towing long distance, I usually put the cat on to cut the noise down.

This was my first real tow with SCT/Gearhead Tunes (Unlimited Tow) AND Insight CTS with EGT monitor.

I did not know about the de-fuel. Will this also be true with the SCT/Gearhead program?

I had the full MBRP system on my truck before I modded it and used my Aeroturbine muffler.

The drone (atleast from what I've seen) occurs until the muiffler fully breaks in. After that it's relatively quiet at highway speeds.

The drone was hardly noticible, untill i removed the cat, then there is rumbling at 40 mph +, and way loud when you hammer on the skinny petal! I dont think the tune would change the temp defueling temps, ask matt @ gearhead!

On our way back to Oklahoma. Started from Tempe today.

Temperatures are WAY down--i think the warmest we saw through Tucumcari was only 85F. Most of the day was in the 70s. Wow.

But, I still have to watch the EGT. This engine will pull very hard on steep grades and downshift to 3rd. Once it does, if the speed is above 65 mph, the EGT will climb to 1300 - 1400 F unless I take action. I drop speed down to 60 mph and control throttle to keep EGT around 1200F.

So...I am going to install a 4" turbo-back exhaust system. The only thing to decide is MBRP or Banks. MBRP comes highly recommended, but I am still concerned about highway speed drone. Can any owners of Banks systems comment on theirs?

MBRP all the way. Excellent material and install is bolt and go. The diesel doesnt drone in any way that you will notice. I had a cat and muffler delete on my 6.0 and it sounded great. Especially the turbo spool through the exhaust. Not loud or brash until you really stomped it and got it close to redline. Regular driving it was timid.
