My dash lights are inconsistent--sometimes work, sometimes don't. Problem is when they are not working, the transmission does not shift correctly in low range. Is this a simple switch problem or can I wire it to a manual switch so I can simply override the switch. This is just a plow truck so I am looking for a quick, easy, & cheap way to fix. RB
The trans in your truck is computer controlled and it bases the shift points on speedo input or more correctly a signal from the PSOM mounted on the back of the gauge cluster, so you need to fix the power problem that is affecting your gauges there is no shortcut.
Manual shift type transfer case works regardless of dash idiot lights, for example you either have it in low range or you don't, light on or off on the dash doesn't effect. If the light doesn't work low would still be low if you put the lever in the right place.
Your post, symptoms you describe tends suggest (at least to me) you have the push button style TC but your title says states "manual shift".

What switch do you want to override?
My problem is when i shift the T case into 4 low and the dash light does not come on the transmission computer still thinks the truck is in high range. Because it thinks it's in high range it wont shift out of first untill the engine is just about to red line and then it shifts so hard that it feels like your head is going to snap off. If the light comes on (It's a crap shoot to weather it will or not) it will shift threw the gears real smooth at a low rpm. The truck has 3.50 gears so I plow in Low all the time. I have another T case so I'm going to try a switch change first and see what happens. RB

Ok yea I see what you're saying, range is monitored on pin 12.
If the lights not lit up because of the switch stand to reason computer doesn't get the info either.
The crappy part is I've been putting up with this for a year before I realized the problem comes and goes with the lights because I never paid any attention to them untill i was teaching my 12 year old how to shift it in and out of low range. It then dawned on me I didnt have a tranny problem i have an electrical issue.

Yea your first post threw me, thought you where talking about the push button type!
Anyway you could hook up a manual switch, put it in low range throw switch provide ground to pin 12.
So I climbed under her to pull the transfer case switch out and realized the shifter was just about ready to fall off the trans and it was seized to the big bolt that holds it. Fixed all that and pulled the switch out. Here is what puzzles me. It only has two wires and it seems to click like a switch. So how on earth would that tell the computer what range it's in? I can see that it would tell if it's in 4 wheel but how a single two wire switch can do two functions is beyond me. I oiled it good and put it back in and it will light up the 4x4 light but not the low range light. ????? What am I missing here?
