I was wondering if anybody had any good exhaust tips. My truck is a 92 EB 351w. I have already put a gibson stainless cat back system on. What I am looking to do now is replace the Y pipe. The down pipe from my from a check valve broke off and is now plugged with a bolt. I have seen some good feedback on bassani x-pipe systems but there web page is not very descriptive. Mostly importantly this needs to pass emissions. I am in PA so any local help would be appreciated.
Also, at some point I would want to put headers on. Would it be better to both things at the same time?
I would highly recommed the Bassani HTC headers and Y (not X) pipe for your application. I have them on my 96, and love them. The Bassani system on mine retains all emissions fittings for street legality. You should check out www.proficientperformance.com They should have your application. How does the Gibson catback mount to your Y pipe? I know my bassani is a 3" in/3" out (cat included), and the catback section slides onto it. It doesnt have the flange mounted setup. I would purchase both the headers and Y together. The nice thing about the Bassani's are that they incorporate a gasketless design for their headers and Y pipe. It all fits like a glove.
I just follow Rich around to say "ditto" when he posts. Emmissions connections are all there and in absolutely perfect orientation to replace the stock Y-pipe and catalytic converter. 3" IN and 3" OUT high flow cat coupled with their shortie headers gives you No gasket to worry with between headers and Y-pipe and the manifold gaskets are a stainless steel frame that holds four compressed graphite gaskets that surround the ports on the heads and crush to seal and fill any and all gaps. The graphite pads are replaceable through Bassani should you ever need to reinstall the headers.
I believe my gibson is 2 1/2" to 3". I know it connects directly behind the stock Cat. Do you think I will have a problem with the bassani. It sounds like I will have to step down to 2 1/2 from the bassani to mate up with the Gibson.
Basically on the Gibson and with the stock cat there is only like 4" between the cat outletpipe and the muffler inlet. The system opens back up to 3" on the outlet of the muffler.
Well, if you want to run the Bassani then, yes you would need to reduce down in on the front side of the muffler.
I just noticed that your original post talked about a broken air injection pipe. You can buy high temp exhaust hose that will allow you to jump between the cat and whats left of that injection pipe if the rest of the original Y-pipe is still in tact. In fact Bassani includes a foot or two of such hose with the Y-pipe to make reconnecting it easier. You can get it from major parts suppliers but its not cheap I think I paid about $7.00 a foot for it. Still a lot cheaper than replacing the whole Y-pipe if thats the only thing wrong with the one you have. If you are looking for a good excuse to replace the Y-pipe (i.e. convincing the wife that it "just has to be done") then by all means go for it.
The end of your post was dead on. Plus there isn't much left of the bung on the Y-pipe. It is pretty rusted and scraggily.
But that brings me to another question: Is the down pipe neccassary? I cut the hose and pulled out the check valve and pipe that goes down to the exhaust. I passed inpection but I know the guy pretty well so.
