I just bought my first pickup, a 1995 F250 with the 7.3L powerstroke in it. It has the 4.10 gearing in it. Does changing the gear ratio affect how much I can tow? Please be gentle I don't know much.
Yah it does
I was looking to change mine in my f-150 from 3:55 to 4:10 but not for the tow power but for the low end torque... But since yours already has it your pretty set... You could change to a 4:56 but I don't think it would be a huge difference.. What size tires
And motor? That will make a difference
It does but you still have other components like brakes that limit you as well and also you will be limited, legally, by the GCWR of the truck from the manufacturer.
I'm just running the stock LT235's. I'm actually thinking of going down to 3.55 I bought the truck because it was just too good of a deal but I don't need all that towing capacity or low-end torque.

Ah. Most people want to tow MORE. You could check junk yards for trucks with the 3.55 gears and pull the rear axle and front 3rd member.
Thanks everyone for the education. I'm sure I'll come along. If anyone has any random truck tips/advice about anything please feel free to let me know.

So if you want to decrease the engine revs a bit and improve driving around gas milage just fit larger tires, the stock rubber actually looks a little silly on these trucks anyway. But be sure to recalibrate the speedo after doing that or your milage may actually appear to get worse.

X2 Actually that's exactly what I did with my 4.10 460/c6 F350 worked out great.

And motor? That will make a difference but of your wanting 3:55 I have 3:55 in my 96 f150 4x4 so I'd be willin to swap with you if they Are compatible.. So will someone chime in and tell me
F150 either has a 8.8 or a 9" rear end with a D44 front. The 250 has a 10.25 rear and d50 front. So no, rears will not swap, but the front 3rd members may swap
