Pertronix installation on Flathead

I just bought a Pertronix Ignitor to install on my Flathead V8. It is a 6V Pos grd system with original distributor. I went to install it today and the distributor does not have a hole in the side to put the wires through with the rubber grommet. Has anyone installed one a Flathead Distributor? Anyone know how to put this in? Thanks

Use the old points wire if it's in good shape

When I installed my Ignitor II on my flathead, the original points wire went through a hole on the front of the distributor (between the distributor and the fan).

The PO apparently removed the grommet because their was a glob of silicone or RTV plugging the hole.

Once the wire and silicone were removed I was able to pass the Ignitor II wires through the supplied grommet and then through the hole. It sealed up nicely... It was actually a pretty tight fit. I had to use a light coating of 3n1 oil to get it in.

Good luck!

I didn't mention it, but mine has been converted to 12v neg ground. Hope that doesn't confuse things.

Guys
When you take out the old wire does it go through a hole in the bottom of the distributor. My wire on the outside bottom of the distributor looks like it is on a stud. Is this stud removeable? Is this where the new wires for the Pertronix go through?

The stud at the distributor base is just a method of getting the primary wire through the distributor housing. The wire inside the distributor is composed of very fine conductors because it flexes and must move freely. Yes, the stud is removable and any replacement wire can be inserted with a grommet or a dab of silicon to seal around the wire. That is where any new wire would go through the housing.

Ray is right, I removed the points, condenser and the flexible connecting wire. Then I just removed the stud on my V-8, put the grommet on the wires, seated the grommet in the hole where the stud was located (it is tight but it will seat just fine) and then crimp the connectors onto the wires.

Mlis,
How did this work out for you. I purchased the pertronix for my truck a couple years ago but I never installed it. I was out tinkering today and saw it hanging on my pegboard. So I thought I would come in and check FTE and see what others thought of them. It seems like anytime I leave the truck sit for a couple weeks the truck wont hit a lick. If I take either fine emery or an ignition file and ever so slightly touch the points it will usually fire right up.
I guess I could just install new points and condenser. No telling how old these are. I've had the truck 3 years and they were on when I bought it.
Here I go talking myself out of the pertronix again.............
Maybe I should drive it more often and not let is sit for weeks.

Pertronix Ignitor

I just installed the Ignitor and Flame thrower coil on my 49 F47 v8 and it went from a 1/4" sometimes spark to a 1" blue flame that lit up the engine compartment
No way I'll flood this engine again!

It is hard to convince yourself that the little solid state module works as well as points and condenser but it is far better. Put your Pertronix in and try it. You can always go back if you want. I would also recommend that, as Brian did, you install a new coil.

I got one, as well their coil, on my 52 with a 215 engine. It works a lot better than regular points and condenser.

Ilya, what pertronix system did you use for the 6 volt system and the approximate cost? My points are ok but I want better reliability.

So now you got me interested. I've got a 52F1, 239 flat, 12v neg ground system. What do you recommend and what's an approximate cost?

This info is for the 215 OHV engine only.

As per Pertronix tech, for the 6v pos ground system, Ignitor 1266P6 is needed. If you also need a coil, then it's #40011.

I bought a set on eBay from KMJ Performance, Ignitor Ignition Module Coil for Ford Inline 6 Cyl Holley Distributor 6V POS | eBay. It's cheaper than buying on Amazon by a few bucks. However, the auction link lists a # 45011 coil, which has different ohms. 40011 is 1.5 ohms and 12v. However, as long as the ohms are the same, the voltage doesn't matter. I contacted KMJ and they sold me a kit with the correct coil.
