My "guess" is the '79 shortbed.
Less sound deadner, less upholstery, fewer seats, No removeable fiberglass top. No tailgate power window.
I'd say the shortbed will be lighter.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was pretty even. bronco has the extra seats and glass, but I think the bronco tub is lighter, if you cut them both off behind the doors.... Plus the truck is longer so a bit more metal. and the truck has the back of the cab and the rear glass, and thats missing out of the bronco. could come down to which one has the must mud and dust dried in all the cracks and crevices...
Im buiding a drag/bog truck and the liter the better . . . I did some online spec searching and it says 79 Bronco is the litest out of any of the years fullsize Broncos which is hard to believe lol, said 79 Bronco curb weight is round 4718 LBS, Shortbed was over 5000 LBS . . . So I'll prob go with Bronco cause I'll drop almost 5-600 LBS when I take off the cap, tailgate and back seat.
if youre building a bog truck I'd definitely build the shortbed. You can only lighten the bogger so much but gutting the bed and using steel or (even lighter) fiberglass bedsides will definitely make it far lighter. There are a few boggers around here that use the bronco, but the hardcore guys all use shortbed trucks with the beds gutted.
Beyond that, you need to think of wheelbase for a drag truck. You do not want a really short wheelbase, they tend to get really squirrely and hard to control.
yeah the short wheelbase is the only draw back in a drag, but in a bog in my past exp. the shorter wheelbase helps a little, so I just gotta see what I'll be doin the most of, Im having a hell of a time finding a shortbed, but I got a few picks of Broncos layin around lol . . . If I could find a short bed Id deff jump on it.
If you must stay with a 78-79 body style the lightest setup would be a truck cab and a lightweight flatbed. Make sure you follow the promoter's rules and don't start hacking and put yourself in a higher class.
Around here we have a couple guys big into Ford bog/drag trucks and the lightest combination they have come up with is a 80-81 swiss cheese frame and a 80 and newer cab. The frame will flex ALOT and transfers weight very well. They run 700-800HP BBF"s with little to no modification to the frames with no problems to date. I can't remember their total weight but its a least 1000lbs lighter than any Dentside truck out there. I almost want to say they are around the 3500# range with a BBF, 1/2 ton axles, and 38's.
Good luck finding a short bed. Few and far between in any sort of drivable condition. You have a pick of broncos? Where are you located? I have an itch for a bronco!
I live In Brook IN, just north of Lafayette, Theirs a local bone yard here and they have a few but far from good shape most of them the rear ends are gone, and overall picked from a little, and bodys are beat up, plus no title I convinced them to sell me one cause it'll be tailered to races . . . but I do see some from time to time round here that are complete drivers.
the swiss cheese frame idea sounds pretty good, that gets you the ugly body style truck but it seems like most of the really successful trucks around here are built soft as hell with full on like 80/20 or 90/10 drag shocks and really soft single leaf suspensions.
of course, a 77 bronco is harder to find but will be a good bit lighter!
yeah true . . but yeah those would be hard to find lol . . . I think im gonna ****** that 79 Bronco I found, at least with some diff brackets I can drop my 460 rite in and wont have any mods or very little . . . then at least I can start gettin dirty, then if something else comes along then I'll switch it out.
just change the mounts, it will bolt right in. 79 bronco came with a 351m most likely, maybe 400m. either way it'll drop it on the factory stands with the adaptor mounts (or cut and drill a plate to move em back).
Yes sir . . I have those little cheater plates LOL . . . Since we're on that subject what does it take to drop it into a newer model like 80s style that had small blocks ??
