My truck smells like antifreeze, dosen't leak, and it's been like this for at least eight years. It dosen't seem like it's a problem at all, but recently it's been losing coolant, slowly. It runs fine just evertime I open up the cap I have to put about half a quart of antifreeze in it. Where is it going and why does it smell? Oh yeah, it's a fuel injected 302.
I recently had that "maple syrup" coolant smell in my 91 F150 with the EFI 302. It turned out to be my heater core had a couple of pin-hole leaks. They would open up when I'd work the engine hard then seal up when I went easy on her.
On my 91 all I had to do was remove the glove box door, take off the 7 or so screws that held the heater core cover on (on the cab side of the firewall, not in the engine bay) and loosen the two heater hose clamps on the engine side of the firewall. Pulled the old one out, put the new one in and buttoned it back up. Replaced the rascal in about 20 from start to finish and ..... no more smell!-:X04
