My 83 302 will not idle!! It fires right up, and then dies. I can keep it running if I pump it, but not for long. It has a new fuel filter, plugs wires, cap rotor, and I put 10 gallons of fresh gas in it with a can of fuel injector cleaner. What could it possibly be?
Could be a fuel delivery problem. Has it sat for a long time? Was the old fuel filter plugged? The reason I ask is crud could have gotten past the old filter and is plugging the main jets in the carb. The accelerator pump in the carb bypasses the main and idle circuits to provide the extra shot of gas and it sounds like it's trying to run on just the pump shot. I'd pull the carb and go through it or at least pull the top off (if it's the stock motorcraft) and clean the crud out.
Another possibility is the fuel pump could be weak or the sock in the tank could be plugged but in that case it would try to run normally for a little while but would act like it's running out of gas.
yeah, it sat for Quite a while, but its fuel injected. It acts like its running out of gas. I'm going to drop the tank and see if its all corroded and plugged up sock that sounds like it. It will shut off, and a little gas will wash away the crap on the sock, and then when it starts back up, it will get just enough gas to run for about 10 seconds. THANKS!
EFI?
If it has a MAP sensor I would look into that.
I had mine sit for 4 years. When I got it running it did the exact same thing.
Replaced the MAP and then it would stay running.
Also pull the IAC valve, test and clean it up.
Good Luck!
sounds like a vacuum leak to me... your getting unmetered air from somewhere.
make sure your map sensor is hooked up working correctly too.
findin a vac leak can be a bear or easy as pie it all depends on were it is. I'd check your upper intake first. you can use a long screwdriver or a mechanics stethescope.. and listen for a hissing sound....(just put your ear up to the screwdriver with the tip on the intake.)
hopefully its just a hardened line and you can just replace it. if its in the intake you'll need to replace the gasket.
