OT : Near Death Experience!

so...

This is Pete.

and pete made a new friend...

but Pete plays a little too rough for his new friend...

This is Tundra...
Pete's new friend.

So...
the lesson here...

if you look both ways before pulling out into an intersection... and oncoming traffic does not stop.... check again... even if your brain says its safe to go ahead.

if i had been half a second later letting off the brake and hitting the gas... i would have been goo. I have an entirely new respect for how solid Pete's are Built. he will need a new hood, and a new fan.

almost unbelievably.... no one was injured.
my steering wheel airbag deployed... and it did nothing to assist the situation. im concerned that the side curtain airbags did not deploy.

the Pete was moving at a solid 65 when the impact took place.
i had accelerated enough that my momentum carried me all the way across Hwy 16 South during my ride in the gravitron.

i think i passed the centrifuge test...

my seatbelt was the cause of the only noticeable soreness and scuffing that i received. little bruising on my neck and shoulder.

everyone on scene was looking at me like ... i cant even describe it any better than to just say they were in absolute awe i was walking... let alone completely unscathed.

im not a religious guy... but.

the numbers were in my favor yesterday.

location...

140 & hwy 16 south about 10 miles south of pleasanton.

it was right at 4:17 when the impact took place.

just some food for thought. so feed your brains some safety.
be careful guys.

Glad you are ok. We were rear ended by a TT in a dust storm last year in a Toyota Highlander which was destroyed.

I might add, look left, then right, then left. Death comes from the left.

Thanks guys...
Im pretty sore today about the shoulders and the back of my neck... but still no signs of any significant damage..

Joe... yah that little truck surprised the hell out of me how well it held up. Im still pretty much flabbergasted that there wasnt a scratch on the cab.
Im also seeing flashbacks of the radical increase in size of that Pete's grill when i glanced left. But i have almost no recollection of the actual impact other than the noise.
Sounded kinda like if you were to shoot a ball of liquid hot metalglass out of a bowling ball cannon into a pile of drummers cymbals.

With tire screeching...

Look left... look right... look left again...

Better the Tundra than you. Glad to hear it took it. Keep an eye on yourself for the next few days...especially your neck and spine. Can take awhile for an injury to truly show itself. Your body is on overload right now.

Glad to hear your safe.

Yuppers...
Did the firefighter thing years ago and saw many times over how bad it could have been... and how lucky i was yesterday...

I have been fighting off people trying to get me to take nsaid's. I dont want anything masking a yet unseen injury somewhere. I do still kind of feel like im still saturated with adrenaline.

You will be. My mom got rear ended a year and a half ago, thought she was fine, a little banged up but nothing horrible. Find out 3 weeks later she suffered a major concussion and severe head trauma which she is still dealing with since then. Good call on the no nsaids, they can definitely mask a lot of things. No point in taking them to feel better, when in the end they can really mask other problems.

Glad to see you are alright. Also surprised at how well the tundra handled it. Maybe if you had a bit more power in that thing you would have missed it completely. Just kidding. Glad to see you are safe.

I totally agree. The v-6 in that truck made it dangerously underpowered. Obviously.
I will never drive another one.

It was cramped and uncomfortable. It causes a severe burning pain in my lower back. Visibility horrendous. There are ridiculous blind spots. And for their weight they get trash for gas mileage. Ive been getting 15avg. On a 200k mile truck. Serviced at the dealer every 5k like clockwork.

I'm glad you're OK. I'm still looking forward to your visit in the Evergreen State... does this damage your plans there as well?

Not in the slightest.
The wreck was my fault but i have a really good employer who understands that stuff happens. The coworker who picked me up has had 6 wrecks in less than a year in company trucks...

This was my first on road accident. Ever.
Up pipes are on the way from clay for motorbug. Hope to at least get rear diff changed over to 3.73. I think we can live without the a/c but i'd like to have it working too. I think i can pull it off. Regardless, the trip is still written in stone. Getting the diff done will just mean we will have a little extra to play with due to mpg savings. She seems dialed in at 63ish for best economy right now... and i cant drive 63ish.

I know this is off topic from this off topic thread but what gear sets do i need to get for my dana 80 in back... the thin ones or the thick ones?

I'm lost on that one, bud. I'm sure a gearing person will jump in soon.

I don't know how efficient a dually will be... the weight and the wind are not your friends on this one. I wouldn't expect big numbers.

I'm glad you're still making it up... I was looking forward to us meeting somewhere in the state.

I look back and forth constantly while pulling out. Not uncommon for me to look back and forth at an intersection 4-6 times. And not just glance fast each way, sometimes look and watch each way for more than a few seconds in case the pillar is covering a vehicle.

Only accidents I have ever been in are from behind and I have seen every one of them coming. Alertness and attention are needed to drive safe. Many don't have this these days.

Glad to hear you walked away from that one. Accidents happen no matter how careful we may be, but to take on a Petercar and walk away...Well...You done good!
I have to admit, I would have either went straight to church, or straight to a bar after that one.
As a motorcycle rider I've learned to look both ways many many many times before I pull out. It doesn't mean that the other guy is looking, but It's still a good habit.
