HELP! We are having no luck in finding a schematic (or any ignition wiring info) for our 1973 E300 van. The main problem is that it is not charging. We have tried new alternator and regulator seems to be ok. Is it possible to convert to an internal from a external regulator successfully? Would someone please advise as to where we could find a good wiring diagram... Any help/advice would be good!
do a search for "3g alternator upgrade", lots of us have done it and its very simple. in short, its using the alternator from a mid-90s ford taurus 3.0, which perfectly mates up to your existing mounting, and wiring is simple as can be. i've installed this upgrade 3 different times, and its always been great.
your search should put you into so much reading material that you'll read until you're confident and go buy one
but if you need any guidance, we're happy to be of more help
Due to my wheelchair lift requiring excess power, I've been looking for a larger alt, just worried about the regulator arrangement, don't want wire hacking. BTW I have the 73 E-100, they come with a 40-60 amp alt in them stock. They charge VIA a fusible link run to the batt side of the starter relay, the fusible link is what tells it to start charging, it's easy to diagnose, feel the insulation between your fingers, if it's stiff, not flexible, it's shorted.
