Hi everyone. I recently purchased my first truck. All I've had up to this point were cars. I bought a 1969 F250 2WD (pics down below). The VIN comes back as having a 360, but the gentleman I bought it from claimed it was a 390 (but from what I've read so far that's not uncommon). The truck has definitely seen better days. It's got a few rust issues, and is in need of some serious cosmetic work, but other than the power steering having gone out and a few small oil leaks, it's mechanically sound. Fires right up, no smoke out of the exhaust, trans shifts firm, and the suspension isn't in need of repair quite yet. It may have even had the Explorer package originally, assuming the dash hasn't been replaced. The truck has been in an accident or two, as there's a ton of bondo on the truck. I only paid $750 for the truck, and I knew it needed some love lol. I did have a question though.....I've been looking up the original paint code, as I'm curious as to what color it was, and the code I have on the door tag is "Z"....I can't seem to find that color code anywhere! Does anyone have any idea what it is? Thanks in advance. I'll be back later with many more questions lol.
I'm guessing the interior you have is the correct color. Looks like a off white and red. I would not know the names of the colors and i'm thinking the seat may be correct , just guessing on all.
Do a Google or some other search and enter the ' Z ' as the paint code, it might bring it up.
E94262 (consecutive unit number or serial number) comes back as April 1969.
Paint code Z is apparently a 1970 color - Baja Beige... unless the production stamper got lazy and used a "Z" instead of a "2" which would cross over to Light Ivy Yellow for 1969.
You know, to be honest, I hadn't thought about googling it with the paint code in the search.....apparently it's federal red (found it here Federal Red 1969 Ford Truck - Paint Cross Reference ).....I knew the truck had been repainted and I was hoping the red was the original, because that's what color I want to take it back to. I did luck out as I have power disc brakes up front. All I have to do now is swap the steering out (it still has the bendix steering gear.....junk yards, here I come!)

Welcome to FTE
F25 = F250 2WD
Y = 360 2V / On sale day, 360's magically become 390's!
R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant.
E94262 = 1969.
131" Wheelbase.
COLOR Z = Signal Flare Red (1969 only).
F254 = F250 2WD, 6,900 lbs. GVWR
7 81: 7 = Charcoal Black Corinthian Vinyl & Black & White Marston Pattern Cloth-Ranger / 81 = 81E Ranger *
G = C6 Cruise-O-Matic.
24 = Dana 60 Rear Axle / 4.10-1 / No Limited Slip / 5,200 lb. Rear Axle Capacity.
6,900 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.
175 net HP @ 4,000 RPM
72 = San Jose (NorCal) Ford District Sales Office, where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.
* This does not appear to be a Ranger, it looks like a Standard Cab.
'69 Rangers have a vinyl/cloth seat, full carpeting, different anodized aluminum grille than a Custom Cab, Ranger grille emblem, different headlamp doors, have upper and lower body side mouldings.
Custom Cabs & Rangers have a horn ring, stainless steel windshield reveal mouldings, upholstered door trim panels, tailgate finish panel. Standard Cabs have none of these features, have an all vinyl seat, painted steel grille.
Compare the VIN on the Warranty Plate with the VIN on the registration to see if they match.
People replaced damaged left doors with used doors. 99.9% of the time, they failed to install the original Warranty Plate on the replaced door.
If the VIN's do not match, NONE of this decode info is correct!
btw: There's no such color as Federal Red / COLOR code J = Red (1961/72), was called Rangoon Red 1961/67 / Color Code T (1966/72) = Candy Apple Red.
If the truck was painted a non standard color per the original purchasers order, there would be no COLOR code stamped on the Warranty Plate, the DSO code would have 6 digits, the last 4 denote a Domestic Special Order.

Per the link I posted, there supposedly is.....And that red matches the red that's on top of the dash and on the firewall behind the dash....on the fender, where the pads on the hood have worn through the paint, its the last color to show, so I'm guessing its the original color....I'm guessing the warranty tag isn't original to the truck

I just looked at the original FoMoCo factory paint chip charts for 1969, 1970 & 1971 that were used at the parts counter:
Z = SIGNAL FLARE RED (1969 trucks).
Z = New Lime (1969 Econoline).
Z = Medium Beige (1970 truck/Econoline).
Z = Dark Tobacco (1970/71 Ford Passenger Cars).
FoMoCo changed COLOR codes more often than women change their minds! Trucks may have different COLOR codes than Ford/Merc Passenger Cars for the same dang colors!
Lincoln codes could be different than Ford & Mercury codes for the same dang colors. Keeping track of all this jazz was a PITA back then, and today, it's still a PITA.
And, there are two different names for the same dang colors. Promotional names shown in sales brochures vs actual color names listed in parts catalogs. (sigh)
Where does the VIN say the truck was manufactured in April? That's what HIO Silver said, but I have no way to confirm as my parts catalog VIN month info ends April 1968.
If the VIN's match, the truck was born a Ranger, but it sure doesn't resemble one today. I'm old (68 tomorrow) cuz I bought a 1968 F250 Ranger and a 1971 F100 Ranger XLT brand new.
Is there any other place on these trucks where they put a VIN? I'm now really curious as to whether or not the VIN I have the truck registered under is actually its own.....I'm wondering about the seat and seat belts as well....both are blue, and it looks like someone pulled the fabric off the bench, didn't have any more foam to put down, so they flipped it over, and then recovered it! I'll take a pic shortly to show you what I mean

There is a hidden VIN stamped on the top of the frame rail, but where it is on a 1969, I dunno.
1961/66: Stamped on the right (passenger) side frame rail either partially under the cab, or forward of the cab.
You're concerned about the seat belts? ALL the Ranger features (if that's what it turns out to be) are MIA, the truck is 43 years old, has had...lawd only knows...how many former owners.
A gazillion parts have been swapped, it's probably been in several accidents and it's been abused.
AZ resident: Off the Black Canyon Freeway just north of Phoenix is where Kevin Marti is located. He has ALL the original 1967/79 FoMoCo records, acquired them in the late '80's when he found out FoMoCo was going to THROW THEM away.
You can get all sorts of info, copy of the original build sheet, new window sticker, new Warranty Plate that has the codes stamped on it that matches how the truck was configured.
martiauto.com / Info is known in the hobby as a Marti Report, but it isn't free.
You will find the Vin in two places. First is passenger side top of frame rail, just in front of, or behind the engine perch. #2 is under the cab on the top of the right frame rail. Both are likely covered with slime and rust/paint. Clean the rail off first, then sand LIGHTLY and you should see them.
Don, tis a beautiful evening in LA LA Land, but the 5 Basset Hounds are barking and howling cuz feeding time was almost two hours ago. That's how long I've spent in this one thread.
Otis is giving me the "fish eye" again, so I better feed them before "She who must be obeyed" starts barking and howling.
