Aw c'mon...if we can't pull 1 H.P. per cubic inch out of our fine American Iron then we're just not tryin' hard enough! I want a 400 H.P. 500 # TQ naturally aspirated 400 CID motor that runs on 89 octane gas and gets over 10 MPG in a daily driver 3/4 ton 4X4.
I mean come on if your going to build an engine for power you might as well go all out and build the hell out of it. Just remember " theres no replacement for displacement" Who cares about mileage there is enough gas in the world. I think it is just like life, live it to the fullest extent.
When you see a lot of stock ricers out there that have four bangers making 250 horsepower, and you have DOUBLE the cylinders, do you really think 300 is enough? Common, you don't wanna get smoked by a h*nda do you?
They might get 250 hp out of a 1.6 motor, but you know those things are aluminum grenades with the pin pulled. I seriously doubt a riced motor holds together much more than 10,000 miles.
Parts for them are very high, for example, a TRD cat-back exhaust for a 2003 Celica gets maybe 5 more Hp and they cost $500. I can get 50 hp for that by getting my heads ported and polished, and still be reliable enough to go 300,000 miles between rebuilds.
SO THAT'S WHY I SEE SO MANY HONDA'S ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD! I always wondered why! And they Say my truck is "Found on Road Dead" Shows what they know.
Besides the whole point isn't Hp, it's torque...Hp determines how fast you can ultimately go, Tq determines how fast you accelerate to that top speed. My 76 Cougar with a 145 Hp 351 could go 115 mph, but it sure was a slug at the stoplight. My Galaxie has, according to Dyno 2000, 272 hp and 407 Tq, and it's very quick off the mark. And because of the highway gear (2.75 rear), when I floor it at 65 and it kicks down into 2nd, it's up to 85 very quickly! I have yet to find out what my top end speed is, anyone have a 140 mph police speedo for a 73 Galaxie?
I still like "Dude, you just got beat by Grandpa's truck" even though my grandfather only drove chevies. I had a '79 F150 drag truck with a stroked 429 modded to hell and back but no nitrous or anything like that. Very very very fast truck, top speed was 174 MPH. Had a C6 with a 1.71 : 1, 9" rear end. SOld it for almost $10,000 toa guy that wanted the motor and tranny, tough as nails. The truck was kinda beat up and it had cancer up the wazoo. The posi lock rear end barely kept the slicks planted though. I only owned it for about 6 months. Shoulda kept the motor, dang it. Never did find out what the HP or Torque was on that thing. I am betting about 600 lb/ft.
