i found the vin, it's 98RC398423. that makes it a 49 V8 F-1. the model # is 8R6 does that tell me anything. can i tell from the motor casting # if it goes with this truck
Dale,
You have a 1/2 ton 8 cylinder, but probably a '50 by the late production number.
Ford used the 98RC****** series run from 1949 thru Sept. 15, 1951.
Do you have raised box side panels (early 50) or flat sides (late 50)?
The motor casting numbers don't mean anything. On the intake flat surface (V8's), passenger rear corner their might be an alpha-numeric series stamped. This will give you the assembly date of the engine. If the engine has been rebuilt this is often missing.
Chances are that it is a replacement engine in there, perhaps a 8BA out of a car. It still could be the original, they had 8RT on the heads. It was common practice then to just get a engine out of a wreck and reolace it. The trucks were worked harder and the engine wore out quicker. At least now you know what year it is
In the half-tons they used a car engine from factory. It wasn't until the F-3's they got the truck engines. But a truck engine only had a different camshaft which lowered horsepower and increased torque. Well that is how it was up here in Canada.
Dale, how was pf? Bring any treasures home with you?
I was looking at your gallery - what a beautiful example of RED! I especially like those white detailings on the hood and cab.
Is this the truck we're discussing here? If so, is the front end original or fiberglass? The front on this truck is '51, but as you probably know, the entire front ends on the 48-52's will swap. And that happened often.
Tim, had a great time didn't make it to any of the meetings. all the trucks were great. this is my first year looks like they are running out of space. the front is metal.
Tim, i was just checking out your pic's. your 48 had a 52 front when you started? my truck is reg. as a 51. if i take it to pf next year will they let me in and do i call it a 49 or 51?
I sold the '52 front end that came with mine and replaced it with a 49 F3 front end I found in a local junk yard.
The 48-49-50's are the same. 51 is like 52's except for trim.
Since your truck is registered as a '51 and has a '51 front end and the serial number is high, it looks like you have an early '51. I think you'd have trouble passing it off as a 49 to anybody that knows the model variations.
'48 serial #'s are unique (88RC-123456)
'49, '50 and '51 thru Sept 15, '51 used the same series (98RC-123456)
After 9/15/51 the serial #'s looked like: F1R1NR123456
thanks for the info, my truck has the 29" back window and the dash is a 48 - 50. are you saying it is possible my truck came from ford with the 51 front end. my vin begins with 9. i could see it having a 50 front end if it was built in late 49 or early 50. but it would seem unlikly ford would have used the older cap as l;ate as 51.
OK, let me back up - you have a 48-50 cab with small rear window? And raised panel bedsides on the box? The box and window date to pre mid-'50.
What I don't have is all production numbers for F1 pickups. I do know that in '48 they produced 139,+++ and figure yearly production numbers would be somewhat close......
So now my best guess is; either someone put a '51 nose on an early 50, OR swapped early cab/box onto a '51. What you need to sort it out are the production numbers for each year to be sure. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I've reached the end of my info.
