The last bit

I have dual tanks on my 1984 ford F250/460. I use the front tank first because the guage doesn't work well, then I switch to the back tank and run it down before I refill with fuel. I have noticed as I start getting to the bottom of the back tank I have a fuel starvation problem. The lower the tank the worse it is. I can drive normal and it is OK but when I accelerate it acts like it is running out of fuel. If you keep driving it will get worse till you cant drive at anything but an idle. If the front tank has any amount of gas in it this will not happen. I can run the back tank completely out. I am guessing that the fuel switch is leaking internally sucking air from the front tank while trying to emty the back. Has anyone experianced this problem or have any advice for me. I have to run back tank last to use the guage that works so switching tank usage is not an option.

I bet you have a fuel filter for the rear tank that is plugged.
One way or the other it is a fuel filter.

If it was a fuel filter I would think it would do this even if the tank is full. The only filter I have besides the socks inside the tank is on the carb(screws into carb, services fuel from both tanks.)I changed it anyway.

Do a search for "460 fuel pump" - you'll find quite a few threads discussing the many known problems with the system. Check all the likely forums.

Thumbs up The last bit

Finnally figured this thing out after driving like this for months. For those of you with 1984 dual tanked 460 trucks, there is a fuel regulator just before the carb. Just inside the inlet side is a screen. After 200000 miles or so of driving this screen can become clogged. Why there isn't a filter before this thing is a mystery. I blew compressed air across the opening(not directly into it since it is a regulator and cost about 60 bucks.) to create a vacuum across the opening. worked well. Put it back on and works great. Always wondered what that fuel filter looking thing was all this time.

I found on my own project that it pays to mount an electric fuel pump as close to the tank as possible, low on the frame.

It was having problems with fuel feed...
But this also made me start thinking again about having an extra tank, and using an electric pump to transfer fuel to the main tank.

Either way, an inline filter could be an excellent investment.
