Powermax turbo issues

i tore apart my oem turbo and found gouged vanes and a worn unison ring. installed a Garret powermax and did a VGT relearn. i am still getting the blowback noise out of the airbox. drove it around to see if this was part of the relearn. as i drove it never changed and after about 10 min of driving it lit the check gauge for high temp shuttered then went right away. im seeing 22psi boost at most. the only thing i found was the plug for the vgt solenoid was partially broken. thought it could not be making good contact but when i pull it off i hear a noticable change. any ideas? thanks

Had an ex Ford Tech look and I guess I'm way off. Looks like the noise is the fan which seems to be way louder than I have heard it. The turbo seems to be cycling ok. Egbp is clean and ok. I guess it all makes sense with it over heating and limping pressure building in the degas bottle. I will check the rad hose for temp to see if I'm getting flow.

I know I'm sounding more and more like a dumb a$$ but I just decided to pull the cap and look at the coolant. It was low and I had to put in 2 gallons to get it full. The degas bottle traps some coolant so I thought it was atleast that high. After driving and watching eot and ect they never exceeded 210.

Thanks for the help blade35. Is it normal to lose about 2 gallons in a month. That's when I checked it last and it was slightly low

Of course it is, you didn't know this when you got this truck. The EGIS (Exhaust Cooling Injection System) uses it when overheating.

you have to figure out where that coolant is going. I haven't added coolant since my last flush 3 yrs ago. It has been absolutely stable. Could be a leaky hose, could be in the exhaust - it is going somewhere though. Your old turbo might have taken out your head gaskets on its way out (overboosting).

that would be fantastic if it was head gaskets. sure am glad i heard all of the horror stories about black onyx gaskets about 2 weeks after i installed them. im guessing i was overheating and what i thought was air backing out the airbox was actually the fan. i realize i sounded like an idiot asking if it was normal to lose two gallons thanks for the humor. im fairly certain the old turbo never boosted over about 24# according to my sct. i am not noticing anything out the tailpipe but 2 gallons over that period wouldnt be much. i will be putting a T in to read pressure on the degas bottle tomorrow. My main problem is that this is the wifes kid hauler and she is terrified it will blow the gaskets on her again and i am about 7k the wrong way of what its worth. thanks again for everyones help and humor

Look if its losing that much coolant its got to be going out the exhaust or blowing out the degas bottle . Just keep checking it everyday and see . and get a scangauge or something to read coolant temps and the oil temps .

I agree and although i have only had my truck a couple months i have not had to add any coolant let alone 2 gallons. Thats like 1/3 of the coolant volume the truck holds.

is the sct not accurate on temps? its getting up to 15 psi and popping the degas cap. thats exhaust into the cooland right? no oil in the coolant like the first time and no noticable water in the oil. just noticed this morning it was steaming out the exhaust for about 5 miles.

I am not an expert around here, but this is sounding a lot like head gaskets to me. Sorry man
