The key I have found with any electric motor is not to over work it, use it how it was designed. That means letting the tool do the work, there is an old joke about a wood cutter who decided to upgrade to a chainsaw because he heard they cut more wood in less time and work, he complained to a friend how his production went down with the chainsaw, the friend came over to check out his saw for him and scared the hel* out of him when he started the saw. The moral, use the tool how it was designed, if you do find yourself over working the tool allow it to run free with no load until cool air is coming out of the vents. I saw more idiots burn up great tools when I was working as a mill wright by over working the tool and just shutting it off to set and cook in its own heat. I have probably eight grinders currently some more that twenty years old and none of them have any problems, the good ones and the cheap ones.

Another trick to making them last longer, along with what Dave said is to have whatever attachment or abrasive, brush or whatever balanced. If it is out of balance the bearings go pretty quickly.
