I have a 86 E-150 302 f/inj. with the fuel filter in the frame....you know the black box.......what is the life of this filter ? I have never changed it......and i have not had any problems so far.
second question.......can it be replaced with a cheaper in line filter as i have been told the filter i have is over $ 100.00 to replace it.
at this time i am restoreing the van and its on blocks striped to the bare shell....no wires...no dash...no engine......frame has been undercoated and body is being sanded for paint......so now would be a good time to replace the filter or reinstall the one i have.
Fuel filter should be replaced every 30,000 miles at the very least. I replace fuel filters once a year, then I don't get any trouble and it's easier on the fuel pump. If my memory serves me correctly, they are pretty cheap, I'd replace it.
I believe that little black box on the frame is actually the high pressure fuel pump, and reservoir. There is a way to replace the filter in this for cheap, steve83 knows, I can't remember offhand. The actual fuel filter is mounted almost right under your foot on the driver's side framerail. It's a small silver (or rust) colored can with a line into each end.
