Our Boy scout troop has a 82 ford school bus. It has a 370-2V in it. It has a few problems we are needing help with. First off it has an exhaust leak on the right hand side. Of course all the bolts for the manifold are rusted in place so I'm sure most of them will break off when removed. The manifold looks like it may be cracked so my first question is will a manifold off a 429 or 460 fit? my second question is if the manifold isnt cracked and all i gotta do is put a new gasket in it will one from a 429 or 460 work.....most of the local part stores i've talked to dont have or cant order parts for the 370. Now for my third and final question, i've got to rebuild the carb on it. Should I rebuild the original carb or replace it with a four barrel? Will a four barrel intake off a 429 or 460 work on it? Thanks in advanced for any and all info on this matter.
The manifold fitment depends on how the manifolds are designed now. I believe most 370's were front mounted, so the exhaust manifolds turned down at the center. 429/460's had swept manifolds because they mounted to the frame on the sides, like this
If your 370 has the center exit, I don't believe 460 manifolds will work.
A 4 barrel intake should swap on no problem. The 370 I had came with a 4bbl manifold which was identical to the intake that came off my 79' 460, aside from there being no exhaust heat riser for the carb.
If the bolts look bad do yourself a favor and just burn the heads off with a torch and then remove the manifold. That way you have something to work with rather than snapped off flush bolts. Heat the areas up good and hot, strike the bolt hard with a hammer a few times then put the candle wax to them & work them back and forth with vice grips. Don''t force them, if they aren't moving reheat, beat some more and put more candle wax to them.
